On this day: Ricardo Mayorga emerged victorious in a brutal war of attrition.

In his tremendous career, the warrior earned the respect of the fans with his aggressive style inside the ring.

Irrespective of whether his opponent was more skilled or not, he kept marching forward, determined to get the job done.

And despite the odds being against him, he defeated a technically superior boxer on two occasions.

Ricardo Mayorga beat Vernon Forrest in an epic rematch

After defeating Vernon Forrest in an enormous upset, Ricardo Mayorga was determined to repeat the feat in the rematch.

The pair traded leather for the second time on July 12, 2003, in ‘The Battle of Orleans’ at The Orleans in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

Mayorga started at a ferocious pace, rocking his rival in the second round.

However, refusing to let go of his WBA, WBC and Ring Magazine titles, Forrest bit down on his gumshield, and began to turn the momentum in his favor.

But with an unrelenting will to win, the Nicaraguan managed to get himself back into the ascendency, finishing strong to win the contest via a narrow majority decision.

Ricardo Mayorga lost his next fight to Cory Spinks

After his big win over Forrest, Mayorga put belts on the line against Cory Spinks.

His opponent, held the IBF title, making the bout a contest for the undisputed welterweight championships.

Spinks utilized his boxing skills to edge past his rival and win a very close majority decision.
