Oleksandr Usyk dethroned unbeaten world champion in front of future rival on commentary duty in 2016

Oleksandr Usyk can easily be considered one of the 21st century’s top fighters as he maintains his unbeaten record.

Usyk and Daniel Dubois will meet for a second time following their controversial first meeting when they share the ring at Wembley Stadium on July 19th.

The Ukrainian will aim to become a two-time undisputed heavyweight champion, as he also was able to unify all four of the belts at cruiserweight.

Usyk’s reign as a world champion began back in 2016, when he was able to dethrone an unbeaten title holder.

Oleksandr Usyk defeated Krzysztof Glowacki in Poland in 2016

After winning the opening nine fights of his professional career, Usyk was given the opportunity to compete for the WBO World Cruiserweight title.

In order to call himself a world champion, the Ukrainian would have to go into enemy territory to take on Krzysztof Glowacki.

Fighting in September 2016, Usyk and Glowacki met in Gdansk, Poland as both fighters were unbeaten.

Glowacki had a record of 26-0, as he was looking to make the second defense of his WBO World Cruiserweight belt. To win the title, Glowacki defeated the only opponent Usyk didn’t like, Marco Huck.

When challenged by Usyk, Glowacki would not have the same success. Despite picking up some rounds in the fight in Poland, Glowacki suffered his first professional loss.

Commentating on the fight was then-future Usyk opponent Tony Bellew, who witnessed the Ukrainian showing his world-class skills.

In the final moments of the fight, Usyk could be seen smiling and enjoying his crowning moment in the ring. The judges’ scorecards all went in favor of Usyk, as the scores were 117-111, 119-109, and 117-111.

With a 10-0 record, Usyk could call himself a world champion. As for Glowacki, he would go on to suffer further defeats to Mairis Breidis, Lawrence Okolie, and Richard Riakporhe.

Oleksandr Usyk would go on to face Tony Bellew in 2018

Bellew had the best seat in the house when he commentated on Usyk’s title-winning performance in Poland. However, the vantage point did not serve him well in their 2018 meeting.

After Bellew won the WBC World Cruiserweight title in May 2016, he vacated the title the following year to have his fight series with David Haye at heavyweight.

Returning to the 200 lbs division, Bellew challenged Usyk to become a two-time champion. For their 2018 meeting, Usyk was a unified champion.

Despite the fight being a competitive one, it would end in brutal fashion. Usyk knocked out Bellew in round eight of their undisputed world title fight, in what was the last fight for ‘Bomber’.
