Mike Tyson’s former opponent claimed ‘he lied’ about infamous street fight that broke his hand

Mike Tyson said some things about Mitch Green regarding their controversial street fight that the former boxer has vehemently refuted.

Two years after Tyson beat Green in 1996, the pair met outside Dapper Dan’s in Harlem before chaos erupted.

An argument led to a fight, with Tyson punching Green in the head before fleeing the scene, worried that he’d killed the man after his head hit the concrete.

The brawl led to a court case between the pair, although Green does not think Tyson has been telling the truth about the fight, all these years later.

Mitch Green accused Mike Tyson of lying about their infamous Harlem street brawl

Tyson claimed he thought Green was high on PCP and fled the scene because he thought he’d killed him, something that the former boxer vehemently denied.

Green spoke with djvlad in 2024 about the infamous brawl, which left him with numerous stitches in his face and Tyson with a broken hand.

He accused Tyson of lying about the bout, specifically about the claim that Green was high on PCP at the time, and coined a new nickname for Tyson after the fight.

Green explained: “He lied. If I were high on PCP, I’d have been knocked out, stressed out. I know, I know, I remember everything. He knocked me down, and I jumped up? Okay.

I was p—– off. The same way I was with a boxing match with gloves on, he busted my eye up just like that. He hit me with his bare hand and broke it!

“Iron Mike? That’s why I call him Cotton Mike! He broke it. Broke his hand and ran, that’s the God honest truth.”

Mike Tyson’s broken hand from the fight postponed his world title bout with Frank Bruno

While both men have different versions of the street fight, one truth that is indisputable is that Tyson broke his hand while punching his former opponent.

The world Heavyweight champion was due to fight Frank Bruno in Wembley Stadium just months after this scuffle, but his broken hand meant the bout had to be pushed back.

What followed was a string of issues that plagued the bout, including Tyson being involved in a car accident, his divorce and ensuing court case with his wife, and a disagreement between his manager and Don King over financials.

The bout was eventually moved to Las Vegas and took place in February the following year.

As expected, Tyson finished off Bruno in the fifth round in what was his penultimate title defense before losing in one of boxing’s biggest ever upsets against Buster Douglas.
