Devin Haney dominated and dropped durable opponent in 2023 to set up Ryan Garcia fight

Devin Haney will aim to become a world champion in a third weight division when he challenges Brian Norman Jr. in November.

Although Norman Jr. was aiming to fight the winner of Manny Pacquiao vs Mario Barrios, he will instead welcome a challenge from former undisputed world champion Haney.

A win for Haney would make him the WBO World Welterweight champion, earning gold in a third successive weight class.

The last time Haney moved up a weight class to challenge for a title, he had a successful outing.

Devin Haney became a super lightweight champion against Regis Prograis

Following a great showing against the now-retired Vasiliy Lomachenko in May 2023, Haney moved to the super lightweight division.

A 25-year-old Haney challenged 29-1 American fighter Regis Prograis in San Francisco, competing for the WBC World Super Lightweight title.

Prograis was unbeaten in his last five, scoring four knockouts. His latest loss had come to Josh Taylor in 2019.

However, the unbeaten Haney was able to dethrone the high-caliber champion. An absolute shutout would see Haney win every round on the judges’ scorecards.

As well as out-boxing the champion for 12 rounds, Haney also sent Prograis to the canvas in round three. A sharp right hand from Haney put down the super lightweight champion, who recovered to see out the bout.

Despite surviving the knockdown, Prograis had little to offer Haney who cruised to his 31st professional win.

Devin Haney followed super lightweight title win with Ryan Garcia meeting

Haney was scheduled to take on Ryan Garcia in April 2024 to defend his WBC World Super Lightweight title for the first time. However, due to Garcia missing weight, the title was not on the line.

There would be no official winner of the bout, as the fight was ruled a no-contest due to a failed drug test from Garcia.

On fight night, Garcia was the winner of the bout via majority decision, as Haney was downed three times in the bout. However, the result was quickly overturned.

A rematch between the two was rumored to take place in 2025, but Haney’s meeting with Norman Jr. makes this unlikely.
