Canelo Alvarez’s dominant win over ‘Sweet Hands’ in 2021 saw the Mexican star land himself in the history books

Canelo Alvarez could cement himself even further as a pound-for-pound great with a win over Terence Crawford this September, though he already had his name in the history books after one 2021 win.

Canelo Alvarez will take on Terence Crawford in Las Vegas on September 13th in a mega-fight between two pound-for-pound elites.

Crawford hopes to carry his speed, skill, and power up two weight divisions as he vies for Canelo’s undisputed super-middleweight titles, whilst the Mexican face of boxing is determined to prove he is not only bigger than Crawford, but better.

A win for either man will certainly last in the memories of boxing fans around the world, though it was back in 2021 that Canelo achieved a historical feat that no other man has to this day.

Canelo became the first undisputed super-middleweight in boxing history with his win over Caleb Plant

In 2021, six months after he decimated the eye socket of Billy Joe Saunders, forcing him to quit on his stool, Canelo faced IBF super-middleweight champion, ‘Sweet Hands’ Caleb Plant.

The fight took place in the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, and saw Canelo drop Plant twice in the penultimate round, securing a stoppage just five minutes before the fight’s end.

The win saw Canelo become boxing’s first and only undisputed super-middleweight champion, but also marked the final victory in a 16-fight unbeaten run.

Canelo’s next fight saw him challenge Dmitry Bivol at light-heavyweight and fall short on points. He has not scored a knockout since, but defended his super-middleweight titles against Jaime Munguia, Gennady Golovkin, Jermell Charlo, and John Ryder, who gave Canelo advice ahead of his big fight.

He vacated the IBF title before his fight with Edgar Berlanga, but regained it in his latest fight. Canelo’s drab win over William Scull saw him become not only the first undisputed super-middleweight champion, but also the second.

Canelo toppled a giant to win light-heavyweight crown in 2019

Two years before he made history at super-middleweight, Canelo jumped from middleweight straight to light-heavyweight in a bid for the WBO world title.

Standing in his way was a six-foot fighter known as ‘The Krusher’, a 34-3-1 fighter who had only lost to one man he didn’t later defeat – Andre Ward, and even that is controversial given many believe Kovalev should’ve got the nod in their first fight.

The five-foot-seven-and-a-half fighter in Canelo, who Roy Jones Jr believes could lose to Crawford, was ahead by just one round on two scorecards going into the eleventh round, with another judge unable to split the pair.

The Mexican removed the decision from the judges’ hands as he sent ‘The Krusher’ crashing to the canvas in the penultimate round, scoring a knockout finish and securing the big light-heavyweight win that would precede a stellar super-middleweight career.
