Canelo Alvarez stopped Alfonso Gomez, who found fame on The Contender

In 2005, Alfonso Gomez made waves after appearing on the first series of The Contender, hosted by Sylvester Stallone and Sugar Ray Leonard.

Showcasing grit and determination, the warrior made it all the way to the semi-final, earning the love of the fans along the way.

Years later, on September 17, 2011, Gomez challenged Canelo Alvarez for the WBC light middleweight title, inside the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

The fight got off to a quick start, with the champion scoring a knockdown in the opener.

Refusing to give up, Gomez got back to his feet and outworked his opponent for several rounds.

In the sixth, Canelo stunned the former reality TV star and proceeded to throw several blows in an effort to close the show, which his opponent was seemingly defending well. Then, in a shocking moment, the referee called a halt to the occasion.

The HBO commentary team, who had the fight a draw at the time of the stoppage, were not best pleased with the official’s decision.

Al Bernstein says ‘Sylvester Stallone was annoyed’ he couldn’t do Rocky II

In addition to his role on The Contender, Stallone has made other significant contributions to the world of boxing, famously starring in the Rocky franchise.

Because of his love for the sport, the actor tried to make the films as authentic as possible, which is why he wanted Al Bernstein to feature as a commentator in the second movie.

However, while the Hall of Famer eventually made his mark in the fifth film, things went wrong with the first sequel.

Interestingly, Stallone was furious when Bernstein wasn’t allowed to feature in Rocky II.
