Canelo Alvarez revealed which career loss hurt the most between Floyd Mayweather and Dmitry Bivol in 2022 interview

Canelo Alvarez can easily be considered one of the 21st century’s best fighters, as he is a four-division world champion.

Preparing to take on one of the biggest tests of his career against Terence Crawford, the Mexican will aim to use his size and experience to get the win over ‘Bud’.

In 67 professional fights, only two men have been able to get the better of Alvarez in a lengthy career. However, many feel that Crawford could add his name to that list on September 13th.

With a record of 63-2-2, both of Alvarez’s losses came in very different circumstances. Between the losses, one hurts one of the greatest Mexican fighters of all time more than the other.

Canelo Alvarez explains why he was not hurt by Dmitry Bivol loss

In 2022, Alvarez once again returned to the light heavyweight division looking to regain his crown at 175 lbs.

However, Alvarez was not able to recreate his impressive win over Sergey Kovalev when he faced Dmitry Bivol. The then-unbeaten star had a 19-0 record, which he was able to extend against the Mexican.

Alvarez’s loss to Bivol was his first defeat since 2013, when Floyd Mayweather dealt the fighter his first loss via majority decision.

In the post-fight interview after his loss to Bivol, Alvarez was asked if that loss hurt him more than the Mayweather defeat. The Mexican great answered by implying his loss to the Russian was not a tough pill to swallow.

“No. I don’t feel that way. I can come out of this fight with my head held high because I gave the best of me.”

Alvarez added, “It was a different weight class, I’m looking for challenges, challenges in my career that take me out of my comfort zone.”

The fighter capped off his response by saying, “I’m feeling proud and I’m feeling good.”

Canelo Alvarez described feelings of fatigue in his fight with Dmitry Bivol

Although Alvarez is often credited with having a good base of conditioning, he admitted after his fight with Bivol to feeling fatigued.

In the immediate aftermath of the bout, the Mexican felt that he had done enough to get the victory against Bivol. However, he did not want to make excuses for the loss.

Alvarez added, “I think I got a little bit tired in the final rounds, but I felt good.”

The super middleweight added, “Maybe the weight was an issue, and made me feel not 100% during the fight.”

The bout in May 2022 was Alvarez’s last outing at light heavyweight, as he has competed at 168 lbs since the loss.
