Amanda Serrano’s opponent couldn’t stand after winding body shot KO one year before Katie Taylor rivalry began

Amanda Serrano and Katie Taylor’s epic rivalry will go down in the history books for its highly entertaining fights.

Serrano and Taylor will have their third fight at Madison Square Garden on July 12th, where it all began for the pair.

Their first meeting in April 2022 saw Serrano and Taylor make history, as they were the first women to headline the iconic venue.

It was the Irish woman who got her hand raised in New York that night, before earning a second victory over Serrano two years later. One year before meeting Taylor for the first time, Serrano showed her class with a thumping knockout.

Amanda Serrano defended featherweight titles against Daniela Bermudez in 2021

In March 2021, a 32-year-old Serrano would aim to defend her unified world featherweight titles against Daniela Bermudez.

The pair would compete in Serrano’s native Puerto Rico, as ‘The Real Deal’ was aiming to defend her WBC and WBO World Featherweight titles.

Bermudez was a 29-3-3 fighter from Argentina and was a super bantamweight champion making her featherweight debut.

The Argentine had not tasted defeat since 2013 and was a three-division champion when she faced Serrano.

Despite her accolades, Bermudez did not offer much of a challenge for Serrano, who improved her professional record to 40-1-1.

Eight completed rounds would see Serrano clearly on top, as she looked on course to defend her unified titles. Then, in round nine, Serrano was able to make a true statement.

With less than a minute left in the round, the featherweights began to trade as they had an exchange in the middle of the ring. During the back-and-forth moment, Serrano caught Bermudez with a shot to the body.

Turning away in pain, Bermudez eventually went down from the punch. Unable to stand to beat the count, Serrano was the winner of the fight via knockout.

It was the only time the Argentine lost via knockout, as Serrano earned her 30th career stoppage.

Katie Taylor snapped Amanda Serrano’s 28-fight winning streak

Serrano would fight on two more occasions after stopping Bermudez before beginning her rivalry with Taylor.

Unanimous decision wins over Yamileth Mercado and Miriam Gutierrez would improve Serrano’s record to 42-1-1, as the fighter now had a 28-fight winning streak.

However, Taylor would be able to retain her unbeaten 20-0 record in the pair’s first meeting. A split decision win for Taylor would see Serrano suffer the second loss of her career.

The win would also mean Taylor successfully defended her undisputed champion status at lightweight.
