World champion reveals offer to fight Canelo Alvarez at catchweight

Canelo Alvarez has jumped up and down in weight divisions chasing glory and one world champion has revealed he has been offered the chance to fight him.

Canelo Alvarez is boxing’s biggest star and a chance to fight the so called ‘cash cow’ is seen as one of the biggest opportunities in the sport.

Alvarez has won titles from as low as light middleweight to as high as light heavyweight and now looks set to try and conker another division.

IBF cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia recently revealed that he has had an offer to fight the Mexican in Saudi Arabia.

Jai Opetaia offered Canelo Álvarez fight at catchweight

Canelo has always talked about a potential move up to cruiserweight to win a title in a fifth weight division.

The Mexican was in talks to face WBC champion Ilunga Makabu before he lost his title to Badou Jack.

Now it looks as if the boxing star has his eyes set on champion Opetaia for a fight in Saudi Arabia at catchweight.

“If Canelo wants to come up to my division man, I feel like he is too small,” Opetaia told Fight Hub TV.

“That’s another fight you know, how can you say no to that?

“The Sheikh (Turki Alalshikh) actually rang me last week asking me, ‘would you fight Canelo?’

“But he said it would be at 175 pounds and I wouldn’t be able to make anything lower than cruiserweight.

“I wouldn’t be able to make 175 there’s no way. I reckon 87, 88 kilos (194 pounds) would be my max.”

Cruiserweight a step too far for Canelo

Canelo surprised everyone back in 2019 when he was able to dethrone light heavyweight king Sergey Kovalev to become a four-weight champion.

The Mexican then attempted to win a second championship at 175 pounds when he faced WBA champion Dmitry Bivol.

The size and skills of Bivol were too much for Alvarez and he was beaten convincingly for the first time since losing to Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Opetaia weighs in at 200 pounds for his contests and is one of the most highly skilled fighters in the sport today.

The weight, power and skills of the New Zealander would cause Canelo huge problems and he should steer well clear of the champion.
