WBC president wants to bring in major rule change for Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk rematch

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman wants to bring in a major rule change ahead of the huge Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk rematch in December.

Oleksandr Usyk became undisputed champion by picking up the WBC world heavyweight title against Tyson Fury in May.

The WBC belt is seen as the best world title in boxing and President Mauricio Sulaiman wanted six judges ringside for the first fight to ensure the right man won.

Now Sulaiman wants to see another major rule change for the rematch between Fury and Usyk in December.

Mauricio Sulaiman campaigns for major rule change for Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk II

The two legendary heavyweights Fury and Usyk will fight again in December and Sulaiman is going to extraordinary lengths to ensure the rightful winner is crowned WBC champion.

The WBC president wants boxing’s own version of VAR to be used for the rematch between the two heavyweights.

He told Talk Sport: “Video replay is a rule that the WBC has had for the last few years but it is a complicated situation with the British Boxing Board of Control as they do not accept its use.

“However, during the rules meetings of the last fight between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk, we demanded that the video replay be used for the WBC’s sake.

“We will be pushing for it in the Usyk-Fury rematch and every fight we are involved in.”

VAR in Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk II makes sense

The idea to introduce VAR into the rematch between Fury and Usyk is not just a good idea for that fight but for all boxing matches.

In boxing, if a fighter suffers a cut caused by a punch and the doctor rules they can not continue, it is scored as a knockout.

If a clash of heads causes the cut, then the fight goes to the scorecards and the boxer who suffered the cut can still win.

Countless times fighters have been cut by a punch but the referee rules it as a head clash because they didn’t see it properly. Bringing in VAR could end this problem and help referees make the right call.
