Veteran coach tips Terence Crawford to implement Floyd Mayweather style in super fight with Canelo Alvarez

If incoming title challenger Terence Crawford is to have success against Canelo Alvarez, a veteran coach has urged him to implement the style of the veteran Floyd Mayweather.

Set for his super middleweight limit debut next month, Terence Crawford will put his perfect unbeaten record on the line against undisputed champion Canelo Alvarez — in a bid to win gold in another division in the sport.

And with pundits, fellow boxers past and present, as well as fans offering their verdict on Crawford’s chances of beating Canelo, a veteran head coach has weighed in on the clash.

Namely, a coach who trained a former foe to defeat Crawford has urged him to implement a Floyd Mayweather-esque style for the blockbuster.

Ismael Salas sees similarities between Terence Crawford and Floyd Mayweather

Dividing opinion ahead of his clash with Mexican star Canelo in just weeks’ time, unbeaten Nebraska native Crawford has been picked against by many within the massive boxing community.

However, in order to find success, veteran coach Ismael Salas, who trained Yuki Gamboa — who pushed Crawford quite a lot during their 2014 fight, believes the challenger would do well to utilize a Mayweather-esque style in ‘Sin City’.

“The only strategy (Terence) Crawford can bring to beat Canelo (Alvarez) is technically — from the point of view of defense,” Salas told Seconds Out, highlighting Crawford’s defensive similarities to Mayweather.

“But if he got something from (Floyd) Mayweather for this upcoming fight, he has a better chance [of beating Canelo],” Salas continued.

“As you know, this American style — this Midwestern American style, rolling their shoulder and countering — Mayweather was the best at it. So if Mayweather can bring something to Crawford, it will be a great, great point.”

Terence Crawford lauds Floyd Mayweather as boxing GOAT

Giving even more credence to Crawford’s admiration for Mayweather is the recent claim from the Omaha native when it comes to the ever-revolving greatest of all-time discussion.

Sharing his thoughts on the age-old debate, Crawford claimed that Grand Rapids veteran Mayweather is his pick as the best boxer to ever lace up a pair of gloves in the ring.

“In my opinion, the best boxer in history is Floyd Mayweather,” Crawford told Seconds Out. “His punches were very powerful, and he managed to defeat virtually all of his opponents in professional boxing.”
