Tommy Fury reveals how his big brother Tyson began his rivalry with Jake Paul

Jake Paul still has eyes on getting revenge for his sole loss, but will first face Julio Cesar Chavez Jr on Saturday, June 28th.

Jake Paul took his first loss in 2023, when he fought to a split decision against Tommy ‘TNT’ Fury.

The fight had been built up for a while, as Fury withdrew multiple times before the fight came to fruition, and the back-and-forth on social media garnered much attention.

Tommy has revealed that it was actually his brother who instigated the rivalry.

Tommy Fury tells of how Tyson Fury’s social media post ignited a rivalry

In an appearance on the world’s strongest man, Eddie Hall’s podcast, Fury spoke about the Paul fight:

“I was boxing on a Frank Warren show in London during lockdown. They put me as co-main, along with the main event. Anyway, I boxed and I won, it was good, and then Tyson put up the ratings on Twitter […] and he tagged Jake Paul because at this time, Jake Paul was making a little bit of noise in boxing.”

Tommy remembered Paul’s initial response to Tyson’s challenge: “He replied, Jake Paul did a message and said Tommy if you wanna fight don’t get your brother to do it, do it yourself.”

Fury described the time between then and their fight as a “two-year war”, full of bad blood and words exchanged.

Though Fury proved his boxing ability was a level above Paul’s when they did fight, Paul was able to drop Fury, and, despite many suggesting it wasn’t as close as it was scored, Fury did only win by split decision.

Jake Paul could get a world title shot before Tommy Fury

With Paul now set to face Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, who insulted Fury by claiming he isn’t a fighter, he could be one fight away from a world title fight.

This is because Gilberto Ramirez will feature as the co-main for Paul’s fight, with Ramirez having said previously that he’s open to the idea of defending his title against Paul if he beats Chavez Jr.

Paul has had just 12 fights, with Chavez set to be his 13th, but it’s possible a world title could come in just his 14th fight, despite his lackluster opposition.

Fury faced 5-1 Kenan Hanjalic in his latest fight, and still seems a way off from truly earning respect from boxing fans.
