Terence Crawford reveals surprising current weight ahead of September clash with Canelo Alvarez

Terence Crawford will make a significant jump up in weight in order to compete in his super fight with Canelo Alvarez.

Much debate has been had surrounding the fight regarding how much the size difference between the fighters will affect the outcome. This includes former fighters such as Shane Mosley picking Alvarez due to his size advantage.

Crawford’s last outing saw him compete at super welterweight, which was the heaviest weight class the fighter had competed in.

In order to make the super middleweight limit of 168 lbs, ‘Bud’ will have to come in 14 lbs heavier than he did in his 2024 bout with Israil Madrimov. However, the former undisputed champion has revealed a surprising number for his current weight.

Terence Crawford reveals his weight is currently far below super middleweight limit

The size difference between Alvarez and Crawford will continue to be a major talking point until the pair meet in Las Vegas on September 13th.

Not only is the Mexican a defending super middleweight champion, but Alvarez also challenged light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol in 2022. In that same year, Crawford was competing at welterweight.

Alvarez was last a champion at 175 lbs in 2019.

In terms of the current weight of Crawford, it may come as a surprise to some. Speaking to Piers Morgan, ‘Bud’ revealed his current weight is 155 lbs.

Morgan’s response to this statement was, “You’ve got a way to go. You’ve got to bulk up a lot.” Crawford replied by saying, “I’m good.”

When asked if the additional weight was a factor that concerned him, Crawford said it was not. “We carry a lot of weight anyway,” Bud added. “I’ll just be fighting at one of my natural weights.”

Terence Crawford weighed in at 137 lbs for his professional debut

Should Crawford weigh in close to the super middleweight limit against Alvarez, he will be around 30 lbs heavier than he was when he made his debut.

Facing Brian Cummings in March 2008, a 20-year-old Crawford weighed 137 lbs as he knocked out his opponent in 26 seconds.

As a world champion, Crawford has competed mostly between 135 lbs and 147 lbs. As for Alvarez, he has won world titles from 154 lbs to 175 lbs.
