Teofimo Lopez’s career is set to take an unexpected turn, as the mandatory challenger for his WBO world super lightweight title is seemingly close to being decided.
‘The Takeover’ comes off two uninspiring performances against Steve Claggett and Jamaine Ortiz, failing to maintain his momentum following a dynamic display against Josh Taylor.
Yet still, after toppling former undisputed champion Vasyl Lomachenko back in 2020, the 27-year-old has proven he can raise his game to the measure of his opponent.
But while Teofimo Lopez has demonstrated a willingness to chase the biggest and most lucrative fights, he may soon be forced to accept a more undesirable option.

Teofimo Lopez could face the winner of Jack Catterall vs. Arnold Barboza Jr
Despite calling out the likes of Gervonta Davis and Terence Crawford, it appears that Lopez is now targeting a clash with IBF welterweight titlist Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis.
Top Rank boss Bob Arum, the American’s promoter, confirmed earlier this week that his attorney has been in talks with Eddie Hearn to deliver the potential matchup.
And yet, while he may well decide to campaign at 147 lbs, the mandatory challenger for Lopez’s WBO strap is likely to be decided in the coming months.
Boxing News has reported that WBO number-one ranked super lightweight contender Arnold Barboza Jr has agreed a deal to face Jack Catterall, who is placed just one spot below in the sanctioning body’s rankings.
And while there is no confirmation that this will be a final eliminator for Lopez’s belt, the winner would nonetheless be in a strong position to call for his title shot.

Jack Catterall and Arnold Barboza Jr have agreed to lock horns
According to Boxing News, the clash between Catterall and Barboza will take place on February 15, headlining a card at the Co-op Live Arena in Manchester, England.
After exacting revenge on former undisputed king Josh Taylor, Catterall produced a comprehensive performance to outpoint seasoned operator Regis Prograis earlier this year.
Barboza, meanwhile, comes off a measured display against former world champion Jose Ramirez, cementing his position as the WBO’s number one challenger at 140 lbs.
Both combatants, therefore, have earned the opportunity to secure a title shot, with the winner undoubtedly looking to rip the belt off Lopez.
