‘Target practice’… Ryan Garcia takes shot at title contender following decision victory

Ryan Garcia was seemingly not impressed by one super lightweight’s performance on Saturday night as he let his thoughts be known.

Garcia is set to return to the ring on the same card as Devin Haney as the rivals will compete in May. The idea behind the two sharing the card is that should they both be victorious, they can finally meet in their highly anticipated matchup.

‘King Ry’ will take on Rolly Romero in his return to boxing. The 16-2 fighter last competed in September of 2024, when he defeated Manuel Jaimes via unanimous decision.

Garcia’s last outing was his infamous match with Haney, which has since been overturned to a no-contest.

However, despite being booked to fight, Garcia could be lining himself up for a fight with a super lightweight contender.

Ryan Garcia fires shot at Pitbull Cruz following win

Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz competed on the undercard of David Benavidez vs David Morrell on Saturday night, earning a unanimous decision victory.

Facing Angel Fierro (23-2-2), Cruz got the better of the pair in the super lightweight bout. The win helps Cruz bounce back from his third career loss having been on the wrong side of a split decision in his last bout against Jose Valenzuela.

However, despite getting back in the win column, Garcia was seemingly not impressed by the Mexican’s performance.

Following the win, Garcia tweeted, “Cruz is target practice.”

Garcia and Cruz were supposedly meant to face off with one another for ‘King Ry’s’ return. However, Garcia will now take on Romero.

The American’s tweet however does indicate that he favors a matchup with the Mexican, meaning it could be a possible match for the future.

As Garcia was suspended for a failed drug test, he has been subject to significant criticism regarding testing measures.

Haney laid out 24/7 drug testing as a necessity for a rematch with Garcia, and it appears as if the returning athlete will oblige.

It was reported that Garcia has officially enrolled in both the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association and the California State Atheltic Commision’s drug testing association ahead of his return to the ring.

The enrollment from Garcia is a positive sign that a rematch with Haney is plausible, should both men be victorious in May.
