Robert Garcia questions Gervonta Davis’ choices amid uncertainty over Lamont Roach showdown

Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis has been heavily criticized for taking a fight with WBA super featherweight champion Lamont Roach Jr instead of unifying the lightweight division.

The uninspiring matchup was scheduled to take place on December 14 in Houston, Texas, but has now seemingly been pushed back to January.

Gervonta Davis will be defending his WBA strap at 135 lbs, which he retained following a thrilling eighth-round stoppage over Frank Martin earlier this year.

And yet, while the pulverizing puncher remains widely supported among boxing fans, it appears that many are becoming frustrated with his lack of impetus to take on the biggest challenges.

Robert Garcia claims that Gervonta Davis vs Lamont Roach ‘doesn’t mean anything’

Davis has confirmed that his next outing will take place in January but is yet to reveal any further details, according to Fight Freaks Unite.

Nevertheless, the 29-year-old’s matchup with Roach remains somewhat bewildering, given that his opponent is moving up from the division below.

Meanwhile, there are several appetizing matchups that could involve the remaining lightweight champions: Shakur Stevenson, Vasyl Lomachenko and Denys Berinchyk.

Better still, Robert Garcia, who trains WBA super lightweight champion Jose Valenzuela, has suggested that a move up to 140 lbs would not be a bad option for Davis either.

But regardless of the largely negative noise surrounding his career choices, Davis nonetheless appears to be on course to face Roach early next year.

“I love watching his fights, but he does need to be a little more aggressive [when selecting his] opponents,” Garcia told FightHype.

“Make the right decisions, you know, don’t let people choose for you. You say, ‘I wanna fight that guy,’ and make it happen.

“There’s champions that do [that], and that’s why we get those big fights happening. Fighting guys like Roach doesn’t mean anything.

“That’s why they have to [postpone] those fights, because I’m pretty sure there was no attention; there were no people interested in watching that fight.”

Could Gervonta Davis vs Lamont Roach land on the David Benavidez vs David Morrell card?

While there is no indication as to why Davis’ bout has been postponed, it has been widely speculated that the contest simply had not garnered enough interest.

And so, with hard-hitting and unbeaten light heavyweight contenders David Benavidez and David Morrell gearing up for a showdown on January 25, Davis vs Roach could potentially land on the same card.

This, of course, is spectacular news for fight fans, who could be treated to a show featuring two of boxing’s biggest stars – Benavidez and Tank – on the same night.

But, then again, one must wonder how this will impact promotional outfit PBC, who are set to lose out on an Amazon Prime pay-per-view card.
