‘REAL LIFE ROCKY!’… Former Canelo Alvarez opponent suffers Upset of the Year KO loss against unknown fighter he was dominating

Jaime Munguia suffered a stunning defeat at the hands of obscure Frenchman Bruno Surace in only his second fight after losing to Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.

The former world super welterweight champion returned to Tijuana, Mexico, last night, looking to place himself back in the shop window for a lucrative opportunity.

After calling out super middleweight rivals Edgar Berlanga and Caleb Plant – two fellow victims of Canelo Alvarez – he was seemingly just one victory away from a mouthwatering showdown.

And yet, in one of this year’s most dramatic moments, Jaime Munguia’s hopes and dreams came crashing down when he was stopped in his tracks by a devastating right hand.

Jaime Munguia loses to Bruno Surace in a monumental upset

Before his unanimous decision defeat to super middleweight king Canelo earlier this year, Munguia had established himself as a sturdy, high volume puncher.

But of course, the comprehensive nature of his first professional blemish derailed his progression at 168 lbs, forcing the Mexican to rebuild himself.

Sure enough, the 28-year-old bounced back with a tenth-round stoppage victory over top contender Erik Bazinyan in September, proving that he remains a fierce, world level operator.

And in a bid to maintain his remarkable level of activity – entering his fourth contest this year – Munguia decided to roll the dice against Surace, an unbeaten yet largely unproven campaigner.

But while he proceeded to put on a clinic – flooring his opponent in the second round – Munguia ultimately succumbed to the full force of Surace, who produced an awe-inspiring sixth-round finish.

Boxing fans react to Jaime Munguia’s defeat against Bruno Surace

Having announced himself on the world stage with a tremendous statement, Surace now has the opportunity to clamor for a world title shot.

That said, the 26-year-old is yet to be ranked by any of the four sanctioning bodies – something that could change following his 26th professional victory.

But still, due to his almighty come from behind performance, veteran boxing reporter Dan Rafael has dubbed him the ‘REAL LIFE ROCKY’, a fitting moniker for the gutsy bruiser.

Instead of hailing Surace’s extraordinary display, though, fans have largely critiqued Munguia for his approach to the fight.

One fan said: “Good. I’m sick of these guys forever fighting tune up quality opponents. Lessons need to be learned.”

Another fan added: “Munguia wanted to play with his food and not take French dude serious… You DON’T PLAY BOXING!”

Someone else said: “Munguia needs to stop fighting every other month.”
