Oscar De La Hoya makes shocking claim about the financial split for his fight with Floyd Mayweather

Oscar De La Hoya claims he made way more than Floyd Mayweather did in their major grudge match.

The pair of boxing icons went head-to-head on May 5, 2007, in front of a packed crowd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

However, while Mayweather would go on to call Manny Pacquiao an ‘easy fight’, and become the face of combat sports, at the time, his Mexican-American rival was the biggest name in boxing.

And it’s fair to say De La Hoya used that to his advantage.

Oscar De La Hoya reveals the purse Floyd Mayweather and he got for their fight

Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather produced a spectacular clash, with ‘Money’, edging out a razor-close decision win.

But while, he walked away with the victory, it was his nemesis, who claims it was he, who emerged with the bigger cheque.

In an interview on The PBD Podcast, De La Hoya said: “Before Mayweather fought me. He was making $2-3 million on my undercards. After beating me, Mayweather becomes ‘Money’ Mayweather, and he becomes this global superstar, because he has the platform on PPV; we sold two million homes.

“He got a little taste of how to negotiate better terms for yourself, because my negotiations were one-sided against them. I had the leverage; I was ‘The Golden Boy’. I was the ticket seller. Mayweather, at the time, wasn’t selling out arenas.

“I negotiated a 90%/10% split for myself.”

This prompted the host to ask: “So you made $80 million, he made $8 million?”

De La Hoya replied: “Yes.”
