Oscar De La Hoya has provided a damning prediction of Edgar Berlanga’s chances against Canelo Alvarez.
Edgar Berlanga will have his first world title shot on Saturday night when he takes on Canelo Alvarez in the T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, for the WBC, WBA and WBO Super Middleweight World titles.
Despite coming off a career-best knockout win over Padraig McCory last February, Berlanga is a heavy underdog going into the contest.
Canelo emerged victorious with a unanimous points win against Jaime Mungia back in May and the Mexican superstar has not suffered defeat since challenging Dmitry Bivol for the WBA Light Heavyweight World Title in 2022.

Oscar De La Hoya labels Edgar Berlanga a ‘sub-par opponent’ for Canelo Alvarez
De La Hoya believes Berlanga is a ‘sub-par opponent’ for Canelo and has little chance of winning.
In a post on Instagram, De La Hoya said: “Are you upset because I said you are a sub-par opponent for Canelo? These are the facts bro. Don’t let them get you rattled.
“Dude, you are not fighting me. You are distracted and better get locked in because Canelo’s going to tap that a** this weekend. Good luck. And enjoy your first and last pay-per-view experience.”
De La Hoya’s comments came after Berlanga said he would smack the hall-of-fame boxer when he sees him.
Is Edgar Berlanga a worthy opponent for Canelo Alvarez?
Berlanga getting chosen to fight Canelo for a massive payday has riled up some boxing fans.
Many believe David Benavidez should have received the opportunity to face Canelo instead.
Benavidez was the WBC’s number one super middleweight for two years, yet never received a shot.
Despite being unbeaten in 22 contests with 17 KOs, Berlanga doesn’t have any world-class wins on his resume.
Plus, the American with Puerto Rican heritage failed to score a knockout in five consecutive bouts before fighting McCory, even getting dropped by Marcelo Coceres in 2021.
However, at 27 years old, Berlanga has the chance to cause a major upset and become an overnight star if he beats Canelo.
