Oscar De La Hoya admits he ‘feels sorry’ for Devin Haney as Ryan Garcia rematch talks ramp up

Oscar De La Hoya believes Devin Haney’s inner circle is holding him back from becoming one of boxing’s biggest stars.

Boxing Hall of Famer Oscar De La Hoya’s ‘Clapback’ social media posts are some of the wildest videos in combat sports, and the legend’s latest target was a pair of former business partners; Devin Haney and his father, Bill Haney.

Ryan Garcia will return to professional boxing in a clash with Rolando Romero on February 22nd in Riyadh and share the spotlight with Haney vs. Jose Carlos Ramirez on the same card. If both Garcia and Haney win their upcoming fights, a rematch between them would likely be on the horizon.

Garcia originally earned a majority decision win over the WBC titleholder Haney before it was overturned to a no-contest due to testing positive for a banned substance. Since then, rematch talks appeared off the table following Garcia’s WBC expulsion, although Turki Alalshikh remains optimistic about running it back.

In the meantime, De La Hoya ramped up the bad blood between him, Garcia, and the Haneys in a wild social media rant.

Oscar De La Hoya goes scorched earth on Devin, Bill Haney

In a recent social media post, De La Hoya blasted the Haneys ahead of a potential rematch with Garcia.

“This clapback is dedicated to the worst manager in boxing history, Bill Haney, something we can all agree on,” De La Hoya said. “I want to start by saying that I feel sorry for Devin Haney. We hardly ever hear him speak because his daddy does all the talking and it’s cost him all twelve fans he had. Sure, Devin had a bad loss (last) year but it shouldn’t have been career-ending.

“It all could’ve been easily fixed if it wasn’t for his father and manager, Bill, who single-handedly turned it all into a more toxic situation than Chernobyl. I have never seen a bigger f***ing of a boxer’s career in my life. All Devin had to do after losing to Ryan Garcia last April was ‘he beat me, I couldn’t block his left hook,’ and then get back in the gym.

“But instead of focusing on a comeback fight in 2024 and teaching his son how to block the left hook, Bill felt it was a better idea to have Devin sue Ryan for battery and emotional distress, to sue Golden Boy, to sue the New York State Athletic Commission to get Devin’s loss expunged from his record, to fight a civilian at the Orange County state fair, to take the rest of the year off, and to make as many enemies as possible, thus cementing their legacy as the biggest crybaby p***ies in the history of boxing.” (h/t Bad Left Hook)

Devin Haney vs. Ryan Garcia 2 is on the table for late 2025

As of this writing, Devin nor Bill Haney have responded to De La Hoya’s comments.

Before the Haney fight, Garcia knocked out Oscar Duarte after suffering his first career defeat to Gervonta Davis in April 2023. In recent weeks, he’s teased rematches with Haney and Davis for his 2025 boxing plans.

Despite a complicated relationship with Garcia in recent years, De La Hoya remains a loyal supporter of the boxing star’s career. Ahead of Garcia and Haney’s returns to the ring, rematch talks persist, and things could get ugly as the year continues.
