Only man to survive Gervonta Davis’ power was homeless before becoming world champion

Gervonta Davis will seek to extend his explosive knockout streak against Lamont Roach on March 1st. Only two men have ever made it to the final bell.

Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis has become arguably the face of boxing following a career fraught with devastating finishes and powerful knockouts.

Davis knocked out three undefeated fighters in Frank Martin, Ryan Garcia, and Hector Luis Garcia in his last three fights. Tank asked his team for Skittles ahead of the Luis Garcia fight, and stopped him in the ninth round.

Davis’ trainer told of how he once cried witnessing Adrien Broner achieve greatness and how he knew then Tank was a force to be reckoned with.

Davis holds a perfect record of 30-0, with 28 of his wins coming by way of knockout. Only two men have ever survived Tank’s onslaught, with one of them being a journeyman who lost to Tank in a six-rounder in 2014.

The other was a world champion who fought a great deal more than Tank Davis to reach the top.

Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz beat homelessness to face Gervonta Davis on two weeks notice

Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz, now 27-3-1, became the second man to go the distance with Davis, and the first to go a full twelve rounds with him, after he stepped in to face the Baltimore man on only two weeks notice.

Davis was originally set to face Rolando Romero, who he stopped in his next fight. Though Cruz lost the fight, which was scored 115-113, 115-113, 116-112, his stock rose exponentially, and his name became known in the division.

Cruz would also beat Romero years later to claim the WBA super lightweight title.

Yet, the biggest win for Cruz is not his world title, it is the fact he changed his life, beating homelessness and poverty. His wife spoke on their past misfortune, stating:

“We didn’t have a place to live. There were times we didn’t have enough to eat. We didn’t have money.”

Though he lost the title in his last fight against Jose Valenzuela, who suffered a major robbery against Chris Colbert years prior, the 26-year-old is still in title contention and will be in big fights to come.

Isaac Cruz will face Ryan Garcia in Times Square

In a bid to set up the rematch between Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney, Turki Alalshikh is set to host a double-header in Times Square, featuring Haney vs Jose Ramirez and Garcia vs Cruz.

This comes after Garcia’s win over Haney was reverted to a no-contest after Garcia was found to have ostarine in his system.

Garcia’s only loss to date comes at the hands of Tank Davis. Davis will fight former amateur rival Lamont Roach on March 1st and is sure to put on a performance.
