‘One of the best’… Fans react as beloved undisputed champion forced to retire aged 34 due to ‘recurring issue’

Becoming an undisputed world champion in the four-belt era is a feat that not many fighters have been able to achieve.

Despite Oleksandr Usyk becoming a three-time undisputed world champion on Saturday night, being the only title holder in a division is far from easy.

The short list of undisputed world champions includes modern greats such as Naoya Inoue and Terence Crawford, as many elite fighters have not cleared their weight class.

One of the former undisputed world champions of the modern era will no longer be entertaining fans, as he hangs up his gloves at the age of 34.

Josh Taylor announces his official retirement from boxing to conclude 10-year career

Josh Taylor has formally announced his retirement from professional boxing, just three days after the 10-year anniversary of his debut.

The Scottish fighter turned 34 in January, and became a super lightweight undisputed world champion in May 2021, against Jose Ramirez.

Posting on X, the 19-3 boxer said, “End of an era. I have lived my dream for the last 10 years and conquered Mount Everest.

“Thank you to every single one of you for the support through what has been this mad rollercoaster of a journey. Boxing is all I’ve ever known but now let’s see what life has to offer on the other side of the ropes.”

Taylor’s retirement is seemingly down to ongoing eye problems. In his post he says, “I’ve had a recurring issue with my eye that unfortunately means I now have to call time on my career, or risk losing my eyesight.”

The Scottish boxer added, “It is certainly not the way I wanted to bow out, but I have to listen to the doctors and those around me.”

The fighter’s last win came in February 2022, when Taylor defeated Jack Catterall via split decision to defend his undisputed super lightweight titles in Glasgow.

Taylor’s win over Catterall improved his record to 19-0, as he was unbeaten since July 2015.

Despite the impressive career of Taylor, all three of his professional losses came at the end of his boxing journey.

Teofimo Lopez, Catterall, and Ekow Essuman all defeated Taylor between 2023 and 2025 to spoil the final fights of the Scotsman’s career.

The comments also show how important Taylor was to Scottish boxing fans. Fans showed their appreciation by saying, “One of Scotland’s greats. Cheers for everything,” and “Made Scotland proud. Fought like a lion your whole career.”

Many in the replies of the retirement post also feel that Taylor is among Britain’s greatest ever fighters. One user wrote, “One of the best from the UK in a long time,” while another added, similarly, “One of the best to come out of Britain.”
