Lomachenko’s former opponent is set to return to the ring aged 44

Vasyl Lomachenko is one of the greatest amateur boxers of all time, and one of his former opponents, who is set to return to the ring, is not far behind.

Vasyl Lomachenko’s amateur record is 396-1, with that one loss being avenged multiple times by the Ukrainian.

His pro career hasn’t seen quite as much luck, as he now has 3 losses on his record though one man he did beat is another incredibly talented boxer with an unbelievable record of 463-12 – Guillermo Rigondeaux.

Lomachenko’s Cuban rival returns to the ring aged 44

Lomachenko, who wants Gervonta Davis next, fought Rigondeaux in 2017 for the WBO super featherweight title and left the Cuban unable to continue after the sixth round, having won all but one round on two scorecards, and every round on another.

It was this fight that earnt Lomachenko the nickname ‘No Mas Chenko’, as the Cuban wanted no more of what ‘The Matrix’ brought to the ring. Lomachenko also made Nicholas Walters quit in their fight.

Rigondeaux was already nearing his forties when he faced Lomachenko, who begged Richard Commey’s team to stop their fight, but has fought eight times since, suffering two more losses on the way.

He is set to return to the ring in April after winning the WBC international super-bantamweight title by first-round knockout in his last fight.

“An ageless wonder”… Fans react to Rigondeaux’s return

Fans were quick to react to footage of Rigondeaux in training, with some suggesting his age means he should not return to the ring again:

“A disgrace in pro boxing.”

Another wrote: “One punch Rigo …. Has lost his power as he has got older… definitely a great boxer in his day but he’s facing Father Time now”

Others however, are all for him fighting, even if they don’t believe he’s actually 44:

“Rigondeaux was 44 years old about 10 years ago. Dude is an ageless wonder.”

“Great to see the great Rigondeaux looking strong.”
