Lennox Lewis reveals why a major fight the fans wanted to see never happened… ‘Let me clear this up’

Lennox Lewis has opened up about a major fight that never materialized.

In his time in boxing, the British-Canadian cemented his status as one of the greatest heavyweights to have ever laced up the gloves.

While Lewis lost to Oliver McCall via knockout, he quickly bounced back, earning his revenge in the rematch before beating Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield.

However, his last bout ended in controversy.

Lennox Lewis explains why he didn’t rematch Vitali Klitschko

On June 21, 2003, Lennox Lewis defended his world championship belts against Vitali Klitschko inside the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, USA.

The pair engaged in an entertaining war of attrition, with each landing massive shots.

In the third, ‘The Lion’ opened up a massive cut on the challenger’s eye, which by the end of the sixth round had worsened to such an extent that the fight was called to a halt, with Lewis retaining his titles.

However, many felt the stoppage was premature, fueling the appetite among fans for a rematch, which never happened.

Interestingly, Lewis recently opened up about why he didn’t box Klitschko for a second time.

He tweeted: “Let me clear this up for you. Vitali was always supposed to be my last fight, but it got moved up. I took it on ten days’ notice.

“No champ has ever taken on a #1 contender on such short notice. I looked forward to the moment of starting a family and no more camps.

“I seriously considered a rematch, but in the end, decided to go with the original plan. Vitali went on to be a great champion in his own right. I also knew that Father Time was not in my corner.

Lennox Lewis would’ve ‘destroyed Tyson Fury,’ according to boxing legend

While Lewis never rematched Klitschko, at least fans got a chance to see it play out the first time around.

Sadly, having boxed in different eras, Lewis never got the opportunity to face Tyson Fury.

However, one former world champion doesn’t think it would’ve been competitive regardless.

A legend says Lewis would’ve destroyed Fury.
