Lennox Lewis says Shannon Briggs is the hardest puncher he ever faced
On March 28, 1998, Lennox Lewis went head-to-head with Shannon Briggs in a fight for the ages at the Convention Center in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA.
In an explosive first round, ‘The Cannon’ almost secured an almighty upset, with the American landing a scintillating left hook, followed by several heavy blows that left the champion stumbling all over the ring.
However, in a testament to his brilliance and bravery, Lewis bit down on his mouthshield and clawed his way back into the contest.
The Hall of Famer exhibited laser-like precision to slowly grind his foe down, with a plethora of stiff right hands and powerful hooks.
Briggs went down three times, defiantly getting up on each occasion, but in the end, the power was too much, with the referee calling a halt to the action in the fifth round.
However, while he might not have won that night, he earned his rival’s respect, with Lewis branding him the biggest puncher he ever faced over Mike Tyson and an array of all-time great fighters.
Taking part in The Ring Magazine’s Best I Faced feature, the legend said: “Shannon Briggs. He lacked endurance, but Briggs certainly knew how to put his body weight behind a punch.
“Unfortunately for him, you need the full package when you face me, so power isn’t enough. Fans may expect me to say Oliver McCall or Hasim Rahman for punching power, but I basically set myself up against both of them.”
Boxing icon claims he would’ve obliterated Lennox Lewis and George Foreman in the same night
Lewis is undoubtedly one of the best to ever do it, with George Foreman definitely in the same boat.
However, as great as they both were, there’s a boxer who thinks he had the minerals to beat both of them.
And that’s not all.
This legend thinks he could’ve annihilated Lewis and Foreman in the same night.
