Lennox Lewis highlights the massive mistake Tyson Fury made in Oleksandr Usyk rematch

The former heavyweight champion has given his explanation as to what he feels Tyson Fury should have done in his Oleksandr Usyk rematch

Lennox Lewis enjoyed heavyweight title reigns in the 90s and early 2000s and feels Fury could have had the opportunity to regain his belt.

Retiring in 2003, Lewis’ professional record of 41-2-1 includes wins such as Mike Tyson, Vitali Klitschko, and Evander Holyfield.

Considered one of the best heavyweight fighters of all time, Lewis had words of reflection for modern great Fury.

Lennox Lewis feels Tyson Fury should have done more in Oleksandr Usyk rematch

In attendance at the Ring Magazine awards in London on Saturday night, Lewis gave his thoughts on Fury’s performance against the Ukranian champion.

“You got to go after the champ, and you’ve got to beat the champ,” Lewis told IFL TV. “Not enough work was done [by Fury].”

Lewis would go on to explain that he wanted to see a more aggressive approach from Fury, hoping that he could show how much he wanted to become a three-time heavyweight champion.

“There were certain parts where he could have done more for me.”

Fury expressed disappointment in the aftermath of his Usyk rematch in relation to the judge’s scorecards saying, “The judges gave him [Usyk] a Christmas gift,” in his post-fight press conference.

Former champion Lewis would go on to say that he wants to see Fury fight Anthony Joshua and that “you got to give the fans what they want.”

However, despite Eddie Hearn booking Wembley Stadium for a potential Fury vs Joshua fight, the bout may be in jeopardy following Fury’s shock retirement.

Tyson Fury retires from boxing following Usyk loss

On January 13th, 2025, Fury announced his retirement from professional boxing. Posting on his Instagram account, the former champion said “I’d like to announce my retirement from boxing. It’s been a blast. I’ve loved every single moment of it.”

Fans questioned the legitimacy of Fury’s retirement, however, it now appears as if the Joshua fight is becoming less likely.

Joshua has been quite vocal in his desires to fight Fury, as well as Hearn and Turki Alalshikh publically stating their interest. ‘AJ’ noted at the Ring Magazine awards that he is closing in on the end of his career, so making the Fury fight is a priority for him.

“I haven’t got many years ahead of me. I’ve had more years behind me… So what I want to do is leave the game with a bang and make an impact. Be outlandish, great character, have fun with it while we’re doing it, and go for the big fights, and Tyson Fury is one of them,” Joshua told Ring Magazine.

However, Fury has retired on several occasions, meaning that a potential fight with Joshua is not completely impossible in the future.
