Jake Paul performs dramatic U-turn on Canelo Alvarez fight after Mike Tyson jibe

Jake Paul appears to be turning his back on a fight with one of boxing’s greatest after pursuing it for years.

The social media sensation has built a respectable career in the ring since turning professional in 2020, going 11-1 with wins over the likes of Mike Tyson and a host of MMA champions. There have been a few questions, however, about the legitimacy of his fights, most famously the Tyson bout last month.

And he believes that if he were to fight Canelo Alvarez, he would be similarly lambasted by fans and social media trolls. As such, he seems to be moving on from the idea of facing the Mexican icon, who has been his end goal for years.

Canelo Alvarez claims he could get revenge for Mike Tyson by beating Jake Paul

There were over 120million viewers watching on November 15 when Jake Paul and Mike Tyson did battle at the AT&T Stadium in Dallas. And one of those taking in the spectacle was the legendary Canelo Alvarez.

The undisputed super-middleweight champion and former light-heavyweight champion was not impressed by what he saw, and admits he has thought about looking for revenge. “You know, I feel sad about what I saw from Mike Tyson,” Canelo told reporters on Thursday.

“But it’s business for them and it’s fine, whatever. I did think about it [fighting Paul for revenge] when I saw the fight, when I see that injustice. So we’ll see.”

Jake Paul declares he isn’t interested in Canelo Alvarez showdown

However, after hearing Alvarez’s comments it seems that Paul is not interested in a match-up between the pair. He has been pursuing ‘Canelo’ for years and has always seemingly viewed him as a final boss, but he now reckons it is not worth doing.

“Why the f*** would I give him the payday?” Paul tweeted after reading an article about his rival’s comments. “When I beat him it would be the same bulls*** and lies…that Canelo was too small and Jake Paul paid him off.”

He is referring to absurd and baseless accusations that have been made after the Tyson fight, with many fans claiming that bout was rigged. This is despite the event being a fully sanctioned professional bout with gambling permitted and a full ruleset, meaning a fix would be a federal crime.
