‘It’s personal’… Gervonta Davis started rivalry with world champion with one action

Gervonta Davis is easily considered to be one of the pound-for-pound biggest stars in the world of boxing today.

The knockout artist had the first slip of his career against Lamont Roach when the pair fought to a draw in March 2025. However, Davis still holds an impressive 30-0-1 record.

A rematch between Davis and Roach is reportedly in the works, despite rumours of an unorthodox meeting between ‘Tank’ and Jake Paul. However, the lightweight champion is not short of options for opponents.

One fighter who could be a potential opponent for Davis is a fellow world lightweight champion.

Keyshawn Davis explains rivalry with Gervonta Davis

WBO World Lightweight champion Keyshawn Davis has explained his ill feelings towards Gervonta Davis, as he feels the pair have a rivalry.

Speaking on The Art of Ward Podcast, Keyshawn Davis was asked by host Andre Ward where his rivalry with ‘Tank’ stemmed from.

‘The Businessman’ said that a lot of the back-and-forth between him and Gervonta Davis was strictly boxing-related, which Keyshawn Davis did not take personally. The WBO champion said that even after ‘Tank’ mentioned his mother, he still wasn’t overly offended.

After this, Gervonta Davis was able to get under Keyshawn Davis’ skin to make the rivalry personal. “It wasn’t until something got sent to my phone that he was making fun of my mental health.”

Keyshawn Davis then referenced a tweet that Gervonta Davis made, which made him say, “Alright, bet. That was personal.”

“Now I don’t —- with you. Why are you joking about my mental health?… I would never go there.”

Keyshawn Davis then said that he didn’t think Gervonta Davis wanted to fight him, despite the two of them being lightweight champions. “I really think he does not want to fight me.”

‘The Businessman’ then added that despite their rivalry, he and Gervonta Davis ‘DM all the time’. However, he did not go into specifics regarding the context of the messages.

Gervonta Davis and Keyshawn Davis are two of four lightweight champions

Should Keyshawn Davis wish to unify the lightweight division, his options may be limited more than other world champions.

Implying that a fight with Gervonta Davis is unlikely, Keyshawn Davis may not be able to take his WBA crown. ‘The Businessman’ is also not interested in a fight with WBC champion Shakur Stevenson, as the two have a close relationship.

The fourth and final world lightweight champion is Vasiliy Lomachenko.

Lomachenko’s last outing was against George Kambosos Jr., in a fight that would see him claim the vacant IBF title. The bout happened in May 2024, with the Ukrainian not currently booked to fight.

It is also unclear as to whether Lomachenko will fight again as a professional, as there have been rumours of retirement over the previous months.
