‘It’s not for the sport’… Chris Eubank Jr. and Conor Benn’s potential rematch bashed by former world champion

Chris Eubank Jr. and Conor Benn could potentially be the lead candidates for fight of the year after their blockbuster in London.

Eubank Jr. was the winner in his bout against Benn as the son of Chris Eubank won the fight via unanimous decision.

The fight was contested in a relatively close manner, which led many to talk about an immediate rematch. This was also accompanied by Saudi Arabian advisor Turki Alalshikh saying he wants the pair to compete in a sequel in September.

The bout was contested two weight classes above Benn’s usual division at welterweight. Due to this, some feel as if they have seen enough from the British rivals.

This includes one world champion, who feels that a rematch between Eubank Jr. and Benn is unnecessary.

George Groves not sold on a rematch between Chris Eubank Jr. and Conor Benn

Former super middleweight world champion and Eubank Jr. opponent George Groves recently spoke to The Stomping Ground and discussed the all-English affair from April.

Speaking about a sequel meeting between Eubank Jr. and Benn, Groves said, “I’ve seen that movie, they didn’t leave room for a sequel. This is not the reason for a rematch. You have a rematch when there’s controversy, or there’s something bigger at play.”

Groves described a potential rematch between the pair as a ‘fight for fight’s sake,’ implying that the bout does not hold any more significant ramifications compared to their first meeting.

“It’s not for the sport, is it? It’s for entertainment,” Groves said. “So there’s fights for the sport, fights to be the best, and fights for entertainment. That’s just a fight for entertainment.”

Groves said that Eubank vs Benn in a rematch would be “just like” a heavyweight meeting between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua in terms of the meaning of the fights.

Chris Eubank Jr. vs Conor Benn 2 has date and location disrupted by Premier League

Following the conclusion of the first fight between Eubank Jr. and Benn, it was understood that the targeted date for the rematch was September 27th, at the same venue.

However, this now appears unlikely. Following the announcement of the Premier League fixtures, Tottenham Hotspur are scheduled to play in their home stadium on the same date.

The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was the venue for the first meeting between Eubank Jr. and Benn.

Eddie Hearn mentioned alternative dates of September 20th and October 4th when speaking to Boxing Scene in light of the football fixtures.
