‘It was a tough camp’… Caleb Plant’s trainer gives honest take on his fighter’s shocking loss

Caleb Plant’s professional record fell to 23-3 on Saturday night when ‘Sweethands’ suffered a shock loss to Jose Armando Resendiz.

The Mexican fighter was able to join Canelo Alvarez and David Benavidez as the only men to defeat the former world champion.

Plant was on the wrong side of a split decision after the pair fought for 12 rounds in a headline bout in Las Vegas. Now 2-3 in his last five, Plant could not build on his knockout win over Trevor McCumby.

Bookmakers had Plant as a huge favorite going into the bout. However, Plant’s trainer has since revealed that the fight camp did not go to plan.

Caleb Plant’s trainer shares his thoughts on shocking loss to Armando Resendiz

Stephen Edwards, the coach of Plant, spoke to FightHype.com following his fighter’s loss to Resendiz on Saturday night.

The trainer started by saying that he thought ‘the fight was going good’ before adding, “We had some tough spots in camp. They seemed to resonate in the fight.”

Edwards did not provide specific examples of what went wrong in the camp as he felt it wasn’t his place to reveal his fighter’s issues.

In terms of a game plan for the fight, Edwards said, “What I wanted him to do was win the early rounds without expending too much energy. Sometimes fighters want to win rounds by a mile, just win the rounds.”

However, Edwards felt that Plant ‘overworked’ to win the earlier rounds, implying his fighter expended too much energy.

It was also believed by the coach that the crowd was getting on the side of Resendiz more and more as he landed punches on Plant. “It was like a snowball at that point.”

Accepting that it wasn’t to be Plant’s night, Edwards added, “It was a tough camp. But, camps are supposed to be tough. They’re not supposed to be easy. If a camp is easy, you didn’t do your job.”

Edwards also mentioned that he wanted Plant to box Resendiz at a distance, which did not come to fruition.

As well as explaining what went wrong for his fighter, Edwards ultimately gave significant credit to Mexican fighter Resendiz.

Caleb Plant’s coach unaware of injury to fighter’s right hand

In the post-fight interview, Plant revealed an injury to his right hand after being asked why he didn’t use it as much as usual in the fight. However, it is unclear as to whether the injury occurred during or prior to the fight.

When his coach Edwards was asked about the injury, he said he was unaware of the situation, “I didn’t know anything about it.”

“I don’t know when it happened. You guys have to ask him specifically.”

In terms of what’s next for Plant, the former world champion revealed that he does have a rematch clause with Resendiz. However, the fighter also expressed interest in a fight with Jermall Charlo.
