“I can knock him out”… Sunny Edwards is ridiculously confident ahead of Galal Yafai fight

The former IBF flyweight world champion Sunny Edwards plans on putting the rivalry to bed in emphatic fashion on fight night.

Edwards exercised the demons from the Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez loss with a solid comeback win over the awkward Adrian Curiel and set up a grudge match with former amateur foe Galal Yafai in Birmingham.

Following his return to winning ways, Sunny has shocked fight fans by making the claim he can stop Yafai. Those who have watched Edwards are fully aware of his excellent footwork and hit-and-move style, but for those who haven’t come across any previous fights, stoppages are far from a common theme.

Sunny Edwards confident he’ll knock Galal Yafai out

The headline fight of Matchroom’s Birmingham card is certainly a fight for the boxing purists and those who delve into the art of punch and move – the pathway to success with the sweet science.

Despite Edwards only having four knockouts on his record, he is confident of landing the first stoppage since 2019 under new train Chris Williams.

Edwards was clear with his intentions and told Matchroom Boxing: “As long as I establish discipline with my feet, I think I can definitely outbox him and I think I can hurt him.”

Galal Yafai boasts a much more clinical finish rate but steps up in Levels here and will be entering into Sunny Edwards matrix, which, to date, 21 men have attempted to figure out and failed to do so.

World title honours for the winner?

Both fighters excelled in the amateurs and have used that experience to make their way into the professional game, albeit with Edwards having considerably more experience within the pro ranks.

Although this is Galal Yafai’s first experience of ‘big time’ boxing, Edward’s pedigree indicates the winner of the main event fight will move on to a world title fight in their next outing.

A rematch between the two wouldn’t completely be out of the question, however, with Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez out of the flyweight picture, the division isn’t full of many stars or huge names within the sport, leaving the door open to both Edwards and Yafai.
