‘He’s got the capabilities…’ Moses Itauma backed by trainer to take out heavyweight icon with win over Dillian Whyte

Massive prospect Moses Itauma is approaching the biggest fight of his young career so far this weekend, but an even bigger clash may await him sooner rather than later.

Returning to the ring this weekend, Moses Itauma will take on former interim WBC heavyweight champion Dillian Whyte in a main event clash – seeking his thirteenth straight win in the ring.

And while a heavyweight crown is not on offer for the Slovakian-born Itauma this weekend in the Middle East, a whole host of divisional pairings are likely on offer to him with a big win.

Furthermore, his own head coach believes Itauma could potentially be fast-tracked to a massive showdown against a heavyweight icon if he beats Whyte.

Moses Itauma backed for future Oleksandr Usyk pairing

Previously winning Inter-Continental and Commonwealth gold in the past during his brief career in the ring, Itauma has not been pushed beyond the third round in his knockout victories in the ring.

And tipped as a massive prospect in the sport, likely on the cusp of a big rise with a win over the veteran stalwart Whyte, Itauma has been backed to not just accept – but potentially win a fight with the undisputed champion Oleksandr Usyk next.

“It’s [a fight against Oleksandr Usyk] not something that we’d straight away say no to — put it that way,” Ben Davison told Boxing News.

“He’s got the capabilities to [beat Usyk],” Davison explained. “He’s not the type of person who has to catch anybody at the right time. He’s got the capability to beat anybody in the world.”

And while a potential offing against Usyk would come as a sizeable surprise pairing, Itauma just joins a laundry list of recent contenders to be mentioned in the same breath as the Ukrainian megastar.

Oleksandr Usyk’s potential return opponent

With Slovak-born challenger Itauma the latest fighter to be linked to a showdown with Usyk, the 12-0 prospect presents an interesting potential hurdle for the undisputed champion in the future.

To boot, Usyk has also been linked with returns against the likes of cruiserweight star Jai Opetaia in recent days, who has been tipped to potentially fight the heavyweight champion as early as next year.

Furthermore, the controversial Jarrell Miller has vowed to “run over” Usyk in the future if they’re ever matched together, ahead of his return to the ring next month in Las Vegas.
