‘Heard this before’… Tyson Fury’s  retirement draws skeptical response from boxing fans

Tyson Fury has shocked fans as he has announced his retirement from professional boxing.

Fury has seemingly decided to hang up his gloves following the unanimous decision loss he suffered to Oleksandr Usyk in December of 2024.

The loss to the Ukrainian was Fury’s second of his career, having been bested by Usyk for the first time in May 2024.

‘The Gypsy King’ has now taken to social media to retire from the sport. However, some fans are questioning the legitimacy of his actions.

Fans seemingly unconvinced by Tyson Fury’s retirement

In response to Fury’s retirement, many fans feel that ‘The Gyspy King’ will not retire and his announcement is illegitimate.

Among the comments on social media include, “Heard this before.”

Other comments from X users include the likes of “Don’t believe this at all. Saudi money will have him back for the AJ fight,” and “I just don’t think I can believe him.”

As well as fans questioning the legitimacy of Fury’s retirement, other fans feel as if the announcement indicates a lack of desire in regard to fighting Anthony Joshua.

One X user wrote, “Not good enough, scared of Joshua,” while another commented, “He wants to [do] anything but fight Joshua.”

Anthony Joshua strongly campaigning for Tyson Fury showdown

Although Fury announced his retirement on social media on Monday afternoon, Joshua was vocal about fighting his fellow countryman at the Ring Magazine awards on Saturday night.

The bout has been highly discussed in recent weeks following Fury’s defeat to Usyk. Even Saudi Arabian advisor Turki Alalshikh has Fury vs Joshua on his fight wish list.

Joshua took to his Instagram account prior to the event to post a picture of Fury saying that he was looking for the heavyweight later that night.

Talking about a potential fight with Fury, Joshua told Ring Magazine “It’s a fight I want to see, because I’m a fan of boxing, so I want to get that fight underway.”

“I haven’t got many years ahead of me. I’ve had more years behind me… So what I want to do is leave the game with a bang and make an impact. Be outlandish, great character, have fun with it while we’re doing it, and go for the big fights, and Tyson Fury is one of them.”

In terms of any actions taken towards making the bout, Eddie Hearn has said that he has already reserved Wembley Stadium for a potential Fury vs Joshua bout. However, Fury has not commented on whether the fight will come to fruition or not in recent weeks.
