Canelo Alvarez vs Terence Crawford is set to be one of the biggest boxing matches in modern history as the pair face off in September 2025.
As two of the few undisputed champions in the four-belt era, either Alvarez or Crawford will be able to boast a win over a fellow pound-for-pound star when they meet.
Crawford will be competing in the super middleweight division for the first time in his career, which has concerned some people due to his jump in weight.
In terms of Crawford’s chances against Alvarez, one current world champion has weighed in on the topic.

David Benavidez on Canelo Alvarez vs Terence Crawford
Current WBC World Light Heavyweight champion David Benavidez has given his thoughts on the upcoming mega fight between Alvarez and Crawford.
Benavidez has previously eyed up a fight with Alvarez, however, a fight between him and one of the greatest Mexican boxers of all time has not come to fruition.
Speaking on Alvarez’s upcoming fight on the Pound 4 Pound podcast, Benavidez said, “If anyone has a chance to beat Canelo, it’s Terence Crawford. His IQ is on another level, he’s a great striker, it’s just a lot of weight.”
Touching on Crawford’s last outing at super welterweight, Benavidez said, “He [Crawford] felt the power at 154 [lbs], so, imagine 168 [lbs].”
The undefeated fighter Benavidez said he wouldn’t be surprised, regardless of which fighter won the bout in September. The podcast host Henry Cejudo then suggested the possibility of Alvarez stopping Crawford, to which Benavidez responded, “That’s how you see what kind of dog they are.”
“He might get hurt,” Benavidez added. “That —- might activate him to come back strong.”

David Benavidez on the possibility of fighting Terence Crawford
In the interview with Kamaru Usman and Henry Cejudo, Benavidez was asked about the possibility of him competing at 168 lbs again as a professional.
“I don’t want to make 168,” Benavidez responded. However, when given the scenario by Cejudo that Crawford defeated Alvarez, and a fight with ‘Bud’ was a possibility, Benavidez said he would make the weight.
“Yeah. —- yeah. I can make 168. You know, it’s all in the dieting. I don’t enjoy it, but I can make 168. That would be cool.”
Benavidez’s last appearance in the super middleweight division came in November 2023. Facing Demetrius Andrade, Benavidez won the bout via retirement.
