Gervonta Davis’ team mocks Shakur Stevenson’s upcoming title fight defense

Gervonta Davis’ camp has been mocking Shakur Stevenson as he prepares to defend his WBC lightweight title against Joe Cordina.

Shakur Stevenson will face Joe Cordina as a co-headliner alongside Artur Berterbiev vs Dmitry Bivol on a stacked undercard that fans are describing as ‘ridiculous’.

The two will go head-to-head on 12 October in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, however, Gervonta Davis’ camp have found it all rather humorous.

Gervonta Davis’ assistant coach mocks Shakur Stevenson’s next fight

Posting to Instagram on Wednesday (21 August), ‘Tank’s’ assistant coach Kenny Ellis mocked the fight, encouraging fans to get tickets quickly to the “huge” fight.

Stevenson’s decision to fight Cordina has been met with backlash from boxing fans, who have accused him of picking an easy fight.

Cordina comes into the fight off the back of a knockout defeat to Anthony Cacace on 18 May and has never fought at 135 before.

Additionally, Cordina’s not the most well-known of boxers here in the U.S, making it an uninspiring choice.

Gervonta Davis vs Shakur Stevenson is not an even fight, says Kenny Ellis

The long-term vision is to see ‘Tank’ Davis face Stevenson.

From a logical point of view, it does make a lot of sense too.

Davis holds the WBA lightweight belt and Stevenson the WBC one and the two are also undefeated.

But while there are many similarities between the two, Ellis believes that there is a big difference when it comes to them both in the ring.

“They can’t be 50-50 if Tank can punch and Shakur can’t punch,” Ellis told the Cigar Talk podcast.

“Tank is faster than Shakur. So all that stuff about Shakur being fast, Tank is faster. Tank is faster. He’s bigger. He’s stronger. He’s smarter. He ain’t got nothing on Tank. if it goes 12 rounds, I’m walking away from boxing.

“I don’t see what the hype is. Everybody Shakur fought, and I mean everybody, for him to be so elite, they touched him. They just didn’t have what it takes to get him out of there. No disrespect to Shakur. I’m just speaking facts.”
