Gervonta Davis’ stylist dismisses his excuse for taking a knee in Lamont Roach Jr draw

Gervonta Davis’ stylist fires back after ‘Tank’ claimed that the reason he dropped to one knee against Lamont Roach Jr was because of hair grease in his eyes.

Controversy erupted in round nine of Gervonta Davis’ WBA World Lightweight title fight on Saturday when ‘Tank’ unexpectedly dropped to one knee, a move that should have been ruled as a knockdown – but wasn’t.

With the judges scoring the fight majority draw, that decision not to score the knee-drop as a true knockdown undoubtedly cost Lamont Roach Jr the world title… Now, there’s been a new twist in this braided tale.

Gervonta Davis’ stylist fires back over ‘grease in the eye’ claim

Speaking in the ring after retaining his WBA title with a majority draw, Gervonta Davis would throw his stylist under the bus in front of an already-angered Barclays Center crowd.

“She put grease in my s— so the s— was, like, you know when you’re sweating, and the grease comes down in your face? It burned my eyes,” claimed Davis as he was showered with boos.

“This is real facts, look at my hair, I just got my s— done. But it’s all cool, man. They love you then they hate you. Turn around and they’ll love you again.”

Those comments haven’t sat well with Davis’ hair stylist, who has reportedly taken to Instagram to fire back at ‘Tank’ for using their work as an excuse for dropping to one knee.

“I did his hair WEDNESDAY. It’s SATURDAY! He did press, gym and weigh in,” stated stylist ‘leebthebrand’ in a series of posts on Instagram, as highlighted by Happy Punch.

“That’s no excuse, how much grease did I use.”

A photo from inside the hair salon was also shared with the caption: “Take a look aroundddd, you see an overlode of grease everywhere? Newssss flash, you’re not.”

“leebthebrand still ate those braids up but don’t make my girl the reason for it being a draw,” read the second caption on an image of the grease packet itself.

Boxers react to ‘Tank’ going to a controversial draw vs Lamont Roach Jr

Both the decision not to score the drop as a true knockdown, as well as Davis’ post-fight greasing claim, has been met with a wave of cynicism from the global boxing community.

Welterweight king Terence Crawford reacted by stating, “Roach won and that should’ve been called a knockdown, let’s see.

They robbed that boy [Lamont Roach] and it’s crazy. I never seen someone take a knee and they don’t count it as a knock down. Must’ve forgot the rules tonight,” he later said on X.

Consensus ‘GWOAT’ Claressa Shields wrote on social media, “How much they paying the ref… This is crazy.”

Divisive superstar Ryan Garcia also cried foul over Davis vs Roach scorecard, even calling the drop one of the wildest things he’s ever seen in the ring.

“Lamont won that. Not calling that a knockdown is the most wild thing I ever seen in boxing, that type of stuff makes boxing look bad.”
