Gervonta Davis’ career takes a hit as Leonard Ellerbe reveals update on Lamont Roach showdown

Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis is set to collide with WBA super featherweight champion Lamont Roach in a clash that has largely sparked frustration among boxing fans.

The pair were supposed to lock horns for Davis’ WBA world lightweight title on December 14, headlining a pay-per-view card at the Toyota Center, Houston.

However, Gervonta Davis’ long-term promoter, Premier Boxing Champions, ultimately chose to postpone their end of year Amazon Prime show for an unknown reason.

Instead, it appears that fans will now be forced to wait even longer before they finally see Tank in a career-defining showdown.

Gervonta Davis is close to announcing a new date for his fight against Lamont Roach

Regardless of the postponement, boxing aficionados have mostly responded with hostility towards the matchup between Davis and Roach.

Former world champion Paulie Malignaggi, for instance, was quick to slam the main-event, knowing that there is little jeopardy attached to Tank’s next outing.

Meanwhile, Davis comes off a scintillating eighth-round stoppage over top contender Frank Martin, which followed his equally destructive performance to halt Ryan Garcia with a sickening body shot.

And yet, it seems as though the 30-year-old’s momentum has begun to diminish, with the likes of veteran trainer Robert Garcia even questioning his career choices.

Still, the American is one of the sport’s biggest stars but, rather than testing himself against the elite operators in and around his division, he is now taking on an assignment that many believe to be a light touch.

But despite the uncertainty surrounding this event, it appears that Roach will nonetheless punch his ticket for the lucrative opportunity, with BoxingScene reporting that the pair will now square off on March 1, while a new location is yet to be announced.

Leonard Ellerbe promises to deliver the biggest fights for Gervonta Davis

After he takes care of business against Roach – as the vast majority of fans expect him to – Tank will be under an enormous amount of pressure to elevate the level of opposition he faces next.

A unification with WBC titlist Shakur Stevenson is, of course, the fight that the boxing world remains desperate to see.

Failing that, Davis’ manager Leonard Ellerbe will be expected to deliver the next best option, though the former Mayweather Promotions boss is seemingly convinced that no fighter can match Tank’s ferociousness.

“None of these guys can f*** with Tank – not one of them,” Ellerbe told BoxingScene.

“I’m excited to see him get these names out of the way because [the big fights are] going to happen. I don’t want to say anybody’s name, but it’s just a matter of time.

“Line them up, and Tank is going to knock each of them down, whomever that might be.”
