George Kambosos Jr.’s new opponent was dropped and stopped by an 0-2 fighter

George Kambosos Jr. was set to face Daud Yordan in his return fight after losing to Vasyl Lomachenko, but will now face 16-1 Australian, Jake Wyllie.

George Kambosos Jr. has had a turbulent career lately, scoring just one win in his last four fights.

Even that win, which saw Kambosos beat Maxi Hughes, has been highly criticized as a bad decision.

The Greek-Australian fighter seeks to remove all doubt in his comeback fight, after Kambosos lost his world title contest by KO to Vasyl Lomachenko.

The opponent was 43-4 Daud Yordan, but due to injury, will now be fellow Australian Jake Wyllie.

Jake Wyllie was knocked out by a winless journeyman two years ago

Wyllie, 16-1, has been highly touted as a knockout machine, with 15 of his 16 wins coming by way of stoppage. Wyllie holds a split decision win over highly-ranked Dana Coolwell.

However, there is one blemish on Wyllie’s record that cannot be ignored.

Wyllie’s one loss came just two years ago against Faavesi Isaako, an 0-2 fighter. Isaako dropped Wyllie in rounds two and three, and stopped him later in the third round.

After beating Wyllie, Isaako lost three consecutive fights, leaving his record at 1-5. He has since picked himself up a bit and now holds a record of 3-5.

Wyllie hasn’t lost since, but interestingly has also never been asked to go 12-rounds, with only one 10-rounder on his record and many 8-rounders (though almost all end early with Wyllie winning by stoppage).

“This is not a Rocky movie, don’t get it twisted”… George Kambosos Jr. sends warning to fan-turned-opponent Jake Wyllie

Ahead of the fight, which is set to take place on March 22nd, Wyllie and Kambosos spoke to DAZN on the new match-up.

Wyllie said: “This is what dreams are made of […] I’d already arranged tickets to come watch on Saturday and now I’m fighting in the main event.”

Though late notice, it isn’t quite as bad as the time Tim Tomashek fought Tommy Morrison on one hour’s notice.

Kambosos, who has also lost to Devin Haney, was respectful of his new opponent, and expressed that he was happy to give the hometown fighter a shot, but that he was still coming to win:

“I’m giving Jake the ‘Rocky’ shot. The opportunity, but that’s where it ends. This is not a Rocky movie, don’t get it twisted, there is no happy ending. A ‘Ferocious’ statement is what you’ll see on Saturday night.”
