Former world champion offers surprise take on Darren Till vs. Carl Froch ‘mismatch’: ‘It’s so interesting’

A former world champion has offered a rather interesting take on a potential clash of Darren Till and Hall of Fame star Carl Froch later this year.

Turning in his third straight victory of the year, former UFC welterweight title challenger Darren Till scored a devastating knockout win over fellow Octagon veteran Luke Rockhold in their Misfits Boxing 22 headliner overnight.

And staking his claim in an expletive-filled rant for a showdown with former super middleweight world champion Carl Froch, Till failed to land himself an in-ring face-off with the Nottingham veteran.

Hoping to lure ‘The Cobra’ from a 2014 retirement in order to share the ring with him later this year, Till has been backed to potentially upset the apple cart by a fellow Liverpudlian.

Callum Smith claims Darren Till offers ‘interesting’ threat to Carl Froch

A fellow Merseyside star, former WBO light middleweight champion Callum Smith, has weighed in on a potential fight between Till and Froch before the end of the year.

A stablemate of Till, to boot, Smith claimed that if it were a prime versus prime clash, Froch would prevail with relative ease.

However, given Hall of Fame star Froch’s 11-year layoff from the ring, an added wrinkle to the pairing with Till is naturally added.

“That’s what makes it so interesting, looking at Darren Till in the ring against Carl Froch — both in their prime — Carl Froch wins in a boxing match,” Smith told Boxing News.

“Darren knows that,” Smith continued. “Carl Froch against Darren Till outside of the ring, I think Darren Till wins — Carl Froch knows that. But Darren Till now; young and hungry in boxing. Carl Froch; not so hungry in boxing — out of boxing for 10 (sic) years. It’d be interesting.

“…It’s so hard to predict. I remember Froch being Froch, so it’s so hard to predict. He’s been out of the ring for 10 (sic) years.”

But nevertheless, despite their failed face-off in the ring, a promoter remains confident of booking the clash between the duo.

Kalle Sauerland hopeful of booking Darren Till vs. Carl Froch

Previously promoting Froch during his career in the ring, veteran German promoter Kalle Sauerland has spoken quite hopefully of striking a deal between the two.

And with Till hoping to secure a December return to action against Froch — who openly labelled a clash against the mixed martial arts star as a “mismatch”, Sauerland is confident of an eventual breakthrough.

We’ve had a chat, yeah,” Sauerland told Boxing News after Misfits Boxing 22. “I’ve made a lot of fights with Carl Froch over the years, two (Mikkel) Kessler fights, (Arthur) Abraham, George Groves at Wembley Stadium, so I’ve done a few [fights] with Carl.

“I think we can get it [a fight with Darren Till] done, but we’ll see,” Sauerland explained.
