Former world champion calls for Deontay Wilder’s retirement after ‘tune-up’ fight victory

Deontay Wilder returned to the boxing ring for the first time since his knockout loss to Zhilei Zhang on Friday night to get back in the win column.

Wilder’s TKO win over Tyrrell Herndon was his first victory since 2022, as the ‘Bronze-Bomber’ improved his record to 44-4-1.

However, since Wilder’s trilogy with Tyson Fury, the fighter has shown sporadic form. In his last six fights, Wilder, who has recently split from his coach, has a 2-4 record since 2020.

With losses to Zhang and Joseph Parker, many have doubted if the knockout artist can still compete at the top of the division. This includes one former world champion who feels Wilder should retire.

Carl Froch unsure of how much Deontay Wilder has left as he mentions retirement for heavyweight

Speaking on his YouTube channel, former world champion Carl Froch gave his opinion on Wilder’s performance against Herndon on Friday night.

Froch described the fight as a ‘tune-up’ fight for Wilder and says he thinks ‘Herndon showed up to get beat up.’

The British boxing legend then said, “What’s next for him [Wilder]? Has he got a career left? I just think that, I mean he’s lost four of his last six fights… After that, you just think to yourself, he’s finished.”

Froch added, “It’s all smoke and mirrors now. Everyone thinks he’s back with that big punch, and they want to see him get in there… It would be nice to see him now probably hang his gloves up.”

Although Froch said he did not like telling fighters to retire, he also added that he wants to give his opinion when he feels boxers are done in the sport.

Carl Froch names Fabio Wardley and Derek Chisora as potential opponents for Deontay Wilder

Despite thinking Wilder should retire, Froch named some potential opponents for the former champion.

“You got Fabio Wardley, Dave Allen, Derek Chisora, they’re all fights now that would be exciting for this mix of heavyweights.”

Froch also mentioned Anthony Joshua as a potential opponent for Wilder, but also feels that ‘AJ’ should retire. “I think he’s made enough money, I think he’s been great for the sport… But in my opinion, AJ should finish.”
