After beating Shane Mosley and once again earning a ludicrous amount of money, Floyd Mayweather announced 16 months later that he was fighting Victor Ortiz for the WBC Welterweight title.
Floyd Mayweather‘s comeback fight against Victor Ortiz was his first title fight since his 2007 meeting with Ricky Hatton where he handed the Brit his first career loss.
Ortiz was linked with rematches against both Andre Berto and Marcos Maidana, however, once Mayweather decided to make his comeback, the bout was set.

Floyd Mayweather scores one of the cheapest KO’s in boxing history
The fight that played out was covered in complete controversy and is labeled by many as the cheapest KO in boxing history, despite ‘Money’ Mayweather’s success and fortune.
The fight began with the challenger tagging Ortiz with many of his attacks, using his speed and accuracy to continuously land on ‘Vicious’ Victor.
Mayweather controlled the first three rounds and was up on all three judge’s scorecards heading into the fourth round, which is the round which is remembered in the boxing world.
In the fourth round, Ortiz began to land some punches and started to back Mayweather up against the ropes. Once he’d backed the challenger up, he then landed what was deemed as an intentional headbut.
The referee in charge, Joe Cortez, immediately separated the two fighters and deducted a point from the champion for landing with his head, which opened up a cut on the inside and outside of Mayweather’s mouth.
The champion acknowledged his wrong doing and didn’t appeal the point deduction and even hugged and kissed Mayweather on the head in an attempt to apologise.
Cortez then motioned the fight to restart and they once again touched gloves and seemingly both went in for a half-hearted hug.
However, Mayweather quickly pulled away from the hug and landed a huge left hook flush on the chin of Ortiz, as the referee was looking away from the fight and in the direction of the time-keeper.
Ortiz now wobbled from the huge hook, he looked in the direction of Cortez to appeal the cheapshot but was then hit with a vicious right cross which sent him straight down to the ground. The champion was unable to make it back to his feet and Mayweather was crowned the new Welterweight king.
The aftermath following Floyd Mayweather vs Victor Ortiz
Despite the result being covered in controversy, ‘Money’ Mayweather attempted to defend himself after the fight during the in ring interview.
“In the ring, you have to protect yourself at all times. After it happened we touched gloves and we were back to fighting and then I threw the left hook and right hand after the break. You just gotta protect yourself at all times,” he said.
Interviewer, Larry Merchant continued to question Mayweather on whether his actions were usportsmanlike or not but the champion didn’t take too well to the continuous questioning and claimed Merchant should be fired from his role as an interviewer.
