‘Different kettle of fish’… Former Terence Crawford opponent predicts ‘Bud’s’ showdown with Canelo Alvarez

Boxing fans around the world will be watching when Terence Crawford challenges Canelo Alvarez to become super middleweight world champion in September.

Both men are on the short list of undisputed champions in the four-belt era as Crawford will look to attain the status in a third weight division.

As for Alvarez, he will be looking to add another legendary name to his resume as he welcomes ‘Bud’ to the division for the first time.

Fans have had their opinions divided on who the winner of the fight will be. However, one former opponent of Crawford is doubtful of ‘Bud’s’ chances.

Kell Brook predicts Canelo Alvarez to defeat Terence Crawford

Kell Brook was bested by Crawford in 2020. Defeated via a fourth-round TKO, Brook is someone who is more familiar with Crawford than most.

Despite being stopped by the champion, Brook feels as if the size of Alvarez is going to be too much for Crawford to deal with. Speaking to Pro Boxing Fans, Brook said, “You’ve got to sway towards Canelo.”

Although Brook said moving up in weight classes can lead to success against ‘mediocre’ world champions, the fighter added, “When you’re fighting someone like Canelo or Golovkin, it’s a different kettle of fish.”

“I have to lean towards Canelo, but Crawford is very, very, good… Just his size, his experience, his ring generalship, they’re all very, very good. He’s got confidence, he’s big, he’s strong. Crawford is more of a smaller guy.”

Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford have a combined 70 knockouts

Alvarez will be looking to defend his undisputed status with a 63-2-2 record in September. As for Crawford, he will go into the bout with an unbeaten 41-0 record.

Among the over 100 wins between the pair, there have been 70 wins by way of stoppage for the two champions. Given their history of stopping top fighters, this could potentially be an indicator of how the super fight will go.

However, both men will go into the bout off decision victories. Crawford’s last win saw him defeat Israil Madrimov via unanimous decision in August 2024. As for Alvarez, the judges awarded him a victory over William Scull in May 2025.

Although Crawford has won 11 of his last 12 via finish, Alvarez does not boast a similar record. His decision win over Scull was his seventh time in a row hearing the final bell, stretching back to 2022 in Canelo’s loss to Dmitry Bivol.
