Devin Haney working to improve major hole in his game with new boxing coach after controversial Ryan Garcia fight

Devin ‘The Dream’ Haney might be the WBC Champion in Recess, but that doesn’t mean that the popular American is taking a break from improving his arsenal.

Specifically, the talented 26-year-old has sought the tutelage of a new trainer as he looks to develop his defensive boxing skills; a move that could pay dividends when he returns to action later this year.

After his decision loss to Ryan Garcia was overturned to a No Contest, Devin Haney requested ‘Champion in Recess’ status from the WBC – that request was unanimously approved.

Now that a nightmare 2024 has come to an end, it shouldn’t be long before ‘The Dream’ returns to the ring, having recently teased that he’s targeting a comeback fight on March 25, 2025.

Speaking with Fight Hub TV, father and trainer Bill Haney revealed that the team has been expanded ahead of that March 25 return, with long-time friend Nate Jones joining the camp.

“He’s spent a lot of time with Devin as a young fighter, so we just think that he was a great addition. We just want to just tighten up on our defense. We want to be more defensive conscious.

“I think we’ve shown that we’re working on eliminating any of those holes. That’s one thing I feel that a lot of people have mentioned. If there is ever a potential rematch between Devin and Ryan, that’s the one thing that needs to be implemented.”

Having only recently celebrated his 26th birthday, there’s more than enough time for Haney to round out his skillset and get his hands back on undisputed gold; something that Bill was keen to drive home ahead of what could be a stellar year for the dream team.

“He’s been hitting fast. He’s been doing a lot of his running. We’re gonna start doing some sparring this week. At his young age of 26, he’s had 31 [pro] fights with 138 amateur fights. His body needed a well-deserved rest, and I was happy he said that he was going to take a year off.

“Devin is one of the superstars in boxing. He’s the youngest undisputed champion, and also he’s the youngest boss in the business, so the opportunities are around the corner – and as we take a look at everything, of course, it all has to make sense.”

Haney and Teofimo Lopez continue to trade insults online

Whilst Haney is desperate to get his revenge over Garcia, there are plenty of potential super-fights available for ‘The Dream’ in 2025 – including against Adrien Broner, who is rumored to be the opponent on March 25.

Other options include Jack Catterall, Jose Ramirez, and Teofimo Lopez – Haney’s rivalry with ‘The Takeover’ is heating up, with the two having recently traded insults on social media.

“You punk b****,” Lopez replied to Haney’s post concerning his March return.

“Teo got the nerve to try and offer somebody something but he out here begging…I’m making real MONEY,” replied Haney.

For those fans who might be expecting Ryan Garcia to face Haney in March, King Ry won’t be eligible to compete again in professional boxing until late April 2025, following his suspension for testing positive for PEDs after their April 2024 clash.
