Devin Haney ‘buckled’ by 18-0 prospect in sparring match

Boxing prospect’s father claims Devin Haney moved weight classes to avoid the 22-year-old.

Haney no longer holds his WBC Super Lightweight title as he vacated the belt, however, he is still considered one of the very best on the planet.

The former champion Haney last lost a controversial defeat to Ryan Garcia which has since been overturned to a no-contest.

‘The Dream’ announced that he will return to action in March, with an opponent yet to be confirmed. Meanwhile, Haney’s former sparring partner will compete for a world title in Februray.

22-year-old is said to have dealt serious damage to David Haney in sparring

American boxing prospect Floyd Schofield Jr. is set to take on Shakur Stevenson next month. Meeting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on a stacked February 22nd card including the likes of Artur Beterbiev, Dmitry Bivol, and Daniel Dubois.

The 22-year-old will be taking a huge step up in competition but feels he is up for the challenge for the WBC World Lightweight title.

Schofield’s confidence can come from his sparring sessions with top-quality opponents. Among them, is Devin Haney.

Speaking to TalkSport on his son’s previous sparring partners, Floyd Schofield Sr. explained how the Haney session went.

“He buckled Devin,” the prospect’s father said. “He [Haney] ran up two weight classes to get away from him [Schofield].”

It was also added that Schofield Sr. feels his son has the potential to reach the very pinnacle of the sport, but is not there right now. “I’m not saying he’s the greatest now but I’m saying through the lessons and the experience, he’s going to become the greatest boxer of all time.”

Despite being ranked number 17 in the WBC lightweight division, Schofield Sr. says that his performances in sparring have “already showed he’s better” than other top fighters in the division.

Stevenson (22-0) will attempt to make his second lightweight title defense on February 22nd as he defeated Artem Harutyunyan in his last outing.

Devin Haney snubs Teofimo Lopez as next opponent – Lopez questions TopRank contract

Following ‘The Dream’s’ announcement that he would be returning in March, fellow super lightweight fighter Teofimo Lopez engaged in an online altercation with Haney.

Haney’s opponent for March is currently unclear, however, it seems unlikely that Lopez will be facing off against ‘The Dream’.

As the back-and-forth on X began to die down, it appeared that Lopez was unsatisfied with his current contract under Top Rank and Bob Arum.

Lopez tweeted on X, “What’s the number for the buyout [clause] again?” In another post, Lopez added, “I am too expensive for TopRank.”

The social media post followed his online trade with the former super lightweight champion, in which Haney said that Lopez would “fight for peanuts as long as he with Bob [Arum]!”
