Deontay Wilder hints at huge next opponent ahead of comeback fight… ‘It’ll be out of the country’

Deontay Wilder has given an indication as to who he may be fighting next, if his comeback fight against Tyrrell Herndon this month is a success.

Deontay Wilder has won just one of his last five fights after failing to beat Tyson Fury twice, dropping a points loss to Joseph Parker, and succumbing to the power of Zhilei Zhang.

Now just eight days out from a comeback fight with 24-5 Tyrrell Herndon, who got advice from Buster Douglas on how to get the upset, Wilder spoke with Ariel Helwani on the must-win fight, and on what comes next.

Deontay Wilder hints at potential Anthony Joshua clash later this year

In the interview with Ariel Helwani, Wilder was asked if his next fight after Herndon is already done, to which he responds: “You could say so.”

‘The Bronze Bomber’ was hesitant to go into details, but said, “It’ll be out of the country, so it’ll be one of their guys in the country that I’m going to.”

Wilder didn’t specify which country, though in most cases a fighter will go to their opponent’s country when the opponent is the A-side or more popular fighter.

Looking outside of the American heavyweights, there are only a few possible options for fighters that may be the A-side against Wilder.

Anthony Joshua is the frontrunner, as he’s also coming off of a loss and a fight with Wilder has long been discussed, with Wilder’s loss to Parker squandering the fight a few years ago.

Other options, though, include Francis Ngannou or Martin Bakole in Africa, though these seem far less likely.

Deontay Wilder’s nickname was inspired by a legend

Nicknamed ‘The Bronze Bomber’, Wilder has become a fan-favorite for his KO power and fights with Fury in particular.

His nickname came from a combination of things though. In the 2008 Olympics, with minimal boxing experience, Wilder won a bronze medal, and it was this, combined with the nickname of a boxing legend, that gave him his trademark alias.

That legend was none other than Joe Louis, who had an 11-year title reign and was known as ‘The Brown Bomber’.
