Deontay Wilder explains gun-shy performance after mediocre comeback win against Tyrrell Herndon

Deontay Wilder got his first win since 2022 as he stopped Tyrrell Herndon in a lackluster comeback fight.

Deontay Wilder has risen to 44-4-1 after stopping then 24-5 Tyrrell Herndon last night in Kansas.

Wilder, who claimed he was laser sharp, dropped Herndon in the second and seventh rounds, before securing the stoppage in round seven with Herndon still on his feet.

Though he has returned with a win, the late stoppage against lackluster opposition has not done much for Wilder’s reputation, especially since he once again failed to employ his signature weapon as much as he could.

Deontay Wilder didn’t want to become too predictable

In the post-fight press conference, Wilder was asked about his shoulder injuries, which he claimed impaired him in his last few fights.

Wilder went on to discuss his gun-shy performances and that injury wasn’t the only thing preventing him from relying on his right hand.

“I wanted to display more than the right hand because, you know, it’s obvious if you look at my history you understand what’s the power shot, what’s the money maker, and what will get guys out of there and end your career? I don’t want to be obvious.”

“That’s the first thing they waiting on and they’re gonna do anything and everything to get out the way of that.”

Wilder, who wants the AJ fight, concluded: “I want to be a complete overall fighter.”

Tyrrell Herndon becomes Wilder’s 10th opponent to make it over halfway through a fight

Of Wilder’s 49 fights, just ten men have made it past the halfway mark.

Two of those beat Wilder:

2018/2020/2021 – Tyson Fury (27-0 / 29-0-1 / 30-0-1) – 12/12 (Draw) / 7/12 (TKO) / 11/12 (TKO)

2023 – Joseph Parker (33-3) – 12/12 (UD)

That means of those Wilder has unleashed his power on, just eight have survived to the mid-way point:

2010 – Harold Sconiers (17-20-2) – Made it to round 4/6

2015 – Bermane Stiverne (24-1-1) – 12/12

2015 – Eric Molina (23-2) – 9/12

2015 – Johann Duhaupas (32-2) – 11/12

2016 – Artur Szpilka (20-1) – 9/12

2016 – Chris Arreola (36-4-1) – 8/12

2018/2019 – Luis Ortiz (28-0 / 31-1) – 10/12 / 7/12

2025 – Tyrrell Herndon (24-5) – 7/10
