Deontay Wilder claims he’s ‘laser sharp’ as he attempts to bounce back from brutal Zhilei Zhang knockout

Deontay Wilder has his eyes on making quick work of Tyrrell Herndon as he prepares for his comeback fight.

The former heavyweight champion hasn’t competed since June 2024, after Deontay Wilder was knocked out by Zhilei Zhang in Saudi Arabia.

He took a year-long break before Wilder returns to fight Tyrrell Herndon, looking to bounce back from four defeats in his last five fights.

While he’s had a tough time in the past few years, Wilder is ready to be better than ever and end the fight quickly against Herndon.

Deontay Wilder is focused on ‘getting the job done’ against Tyrrell Herndon

Wilder is ‘laser sharp’ as he prepares to face Herndon, and wants to get the job done as he looks to improve his fortunes in the ring.

Speaking with Boxing News, Wilder admitted he is just focused on completing the task by beating Herndon when they face off later tonight.

Wilder said: “Yep, my mentality is just focus. Real focus, you know. Laser-sharp mentality going in, having a good time, having fun, and just getting the job done.

“Completing the mission, completing the task, and getting the job done. That’s it. We’ve been working so hard. I’ve traveled a long way.

“My journey has been a difficult one to get to this point. And now that we’re here, it’s all about having fun at this stage in my life, while still accomplishing the goals I’ve set for myself.

“So yeah, I’m looking forward to it all.”

While Wilder is the big favorite for the fight, his recent outings make a victory less than certain.

Deontay Wilder wants to ‘make myself better’ after being knocked out by Zhilei Zhang

Wilder’s fight with Herndon will be his first since being shockingly knocked out by Zhang in their 2024 bout.

After losses to Fury and Joseph Parker, Wilder was knocked out in the fifth round of his fight with Zhang in Saudi Arabia, causing him to take a year off from fighting.

However, he told the same interviewer that he plans to become even better after dealing with personal issues surrounding the fight.

Wilder said: “The things that I’ve been going through, I would have gone through no matter who the coach was or who I would’ve fought.

“It probably wouldn’t have been a good outcome, you know, because of certain things that were already in place.

“But you live to see another day. You live to prepare and make yourself better, if you want it. Or you can just sit back, mope, complain, and relive the past without doing anything about it.

“For me, I’d rather stay focused and keep working hard. Make myself better, and better, and better. And here I am now.

“I don’t have a ‘give up’ spirit. I’m not a guy who gives up so easily. I lead by example—and here I am, leading by example.”

Hopefully, Wilder is in a better place for his fight with Herndon. He will need to get back to his best to beat his challenger, as a loss could spell the end of the Bronze Bomber’s illustrious career.
