David Benavidez is set to roll the dice against a highly skilled opponent after announcing the compelling matchup on social media.
The 27-year-old comes off a solid unanimous decision victory over former light heavyweight world champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk, whose only other defeat came against Artur Beterbiev.
Prior to his last outing, though, ‘The Monster Bandera Roja’ had expressed a desire to face super middleweight king Canelo Alvarez in an all-Mexican showdown.
And yet, with pound-for-pound star Canelo seemingly remaining uninterested in the potential blockbuster matchup, Benavidez has now looked to secure an alternative option.

David Benavidez reveals that he will collide with David Morrell in 2025
At one stage, it seemed as though Benavidez’s next fight would be against seasoned veteran Jesse Hart, with several reports indicating that the rather uninspiring matchup was set to take place.
But now, a far more desirable light heavyweight clash – with plenty of jeopardy attached to it – has been mooted.
Unbeaten Cuban David Morrell has, indeed, emerged as a frontrunner to face Benavidez next, with ESPN boxing insider Mike Coppinger revealing that the pair will headline a PBC pay-per-view card in Janurary.
In addition to the largely reliable boxing sources, Benavidez himself has taken to social media, posting on Instagram a poster of the potential main event.
“There was a lot of names on the table, but I wanted to give my fans the best fight possible,” Benavidez said Tuesday on social media. “I reached out to David Morrell and his team to make this happen, and we got the contract done.
“This fight really is going to be a banger! [Two] of the best in the division and [two] titles on the line.”
Sebastian Fundora vs Errol Spence Jr to feature on David Benavidez vs David Morrell undercard
While fans will no doubt be pleased to see that the two Davids are set to lock horns, some may argue that the both combatants lack the star power to command a pay-per-view show.
And so, according to the Ring Magazine, the potential super welterweight showdown between Errol Spence Jr and Sebastian Fundora has been mentioned among boxing circles as a possible co-main event.
The movements on this particular bout are relatively unpredictable, though, as it was originally rumored to take place in October.
Nevertheless, Fundora vs Spence – for the WBC and WBO world titles at 154 lbs – would surely be a welcome addition to any Amazon Prime Video pay-per-view card, let alone one headlined by Benavidez in a terrific fight.
