David Benavidez explains exactly how he will entice Canelo Alvarez into blockbuster showdown

David Benavidez remains hopeful that he will lock horns with super middleweight king Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in one of boxing’s most appetizing matchups.

The 27-year-old comes off a comprehensive unanimous decision victory over light heavyweight veteran Oleksandr Gvozdyk, claiming the WBC interim strap in his first contest at 175 lbs.

Before jumping up in weight, though, the fearsome puncher took several notable scalps against the likes of Demetrius Andrade and Caleb Plant at 168 lbs.

And now, it would seem that the two-time world champion is willing to agree on a catchweight in a bid to face Mexican star Canelo Alvarez.

David Benavidez wants the winner of Artur Beterbiev vs Dmitry Bivol

For Benavidez, the key to unlocking a lucrative clash with Canelo is to present him with the opportunity to further cement his greatness by securing more accolades.

And so, it would seem that the American is looking to acquire more trinkets by facing the winner of Artur Beterbiev vs Dmitry Bivol, who will headline a stacked card on October 12.

“Canelo, he says that I can’t offer him nothing,” Benavidez told talkSPORT: “I think Canelo’s a great fighter. I believe in myself. I believe I can beat the s**t out of him.

“Now, if I have all four major world titles at 175 [lbs], in my head that’s the only way the fight’s gonna happen.

“I’m already number one in line to fight for all four belts at 175 [lbs] against the winner of Beterbiev-Bivol.

“I win all four belts, it’d be a great fight and maybe we could do a catchweight, you can put the 168 pound belts, I can put the 175-pound belts and we can fight together, winner take all.”

Could David Benavidez fight David Morrell in the meantime?

While Benavidez has his sights firmly set on Alvarez, or rather the winner of Beterviev vs Bivol, there is another light heavyweight contender who could catapult his name into the mix.

Unbeaten Cuban David Morrell and Benevidez have, rather interestingly, both taken to social media to reveal that a big announcement is imminent.

The pair have been linked with each other for quite some time, with both knockout artists fighting under the PBC banner on Amazon Prime Video.

But, then again, while an in-house dustup between the two elite-level operators would make perfect sense, the mooted matchup is merely speculation at this stage.
