Daniel Dubois’ biggest critic previews fight between his undefeated charge and Oleksandr Usyk’s star pupil

Daniel Dubois will face Oleksandr Usyk for the second time on July 19th, but there is one undercard fight that has been largely overlooked.

Oleksandr Usyk vs Daniel Dubois tops the bill of 2025’s biggest night in boxing, with Manny Pacquiao vs Mario Barrios, Tim Tszyu vs Sebastian Fundora 2, Isaac Cruz vs Angel Fierro 2, Lawrence Okolie vs Kevin Lerena, Bam Rodriguez vs Phumelala Cafu, and Trevor McCumby vs Diego Pacheco all on the same night.

Despite being a stacked night of boxing, there is one fight that has slipped the minds of many which features a British charge managed by Canelo‘s controversial former opponent, and Oleksandr Usyk’s right hand man.

Billy Joe Saunders previews Lewis Edmondson vs Daniel Lapin

Usyk’s mentee, Daniel Lapin, will face Lewis Edmondson, who had a career-best win over Dan Azeez in 2024.

Lapin and Edmondson are both 11-0, and seem well-matched for the fight, though Lapin is far taller and rangier than his British counterpart.

Speaking to IFL TV, Billy Joe Saunders, who scolded Daniel Dubois for taking a knee against Joe Joyce, previewed his fighter’s upcoming match on Dubois’ undercard.

Ironically, Saunders poked fun at Dubois and slated his career, but years later, Dubois is headlining Wembley and Saunders has retired after having his own eye socket broken by Canelo, forcing him to quit in their fight.

Saunders said of Edmondson vs Lapin, “[Lapin] hasn’t boxed anyone of Lewis’ standard. I think, listen, they’ve made a bit of a slip-up there, I think. […] Why not go for a man that everyone’s avoiding, no one wants to fight, The Beast from The East?”

Saunders was asked if he would supervise Lapin’s handwraps as he had planned to do on behalf of Conor Benn against his rival Chris Eubank Jr.

Saunders responded, “They’re very good at their job, very professional, we’re not expecting anything less from them.”
